Missing Birth - Shedwick 1883
« on: Saturday 14 August 10 00:01 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am trying to locate the birth record for my gt grandmother Harriet Ann Shedwick. I can find her on the 1891 & 1901 census listed as born in Bradford/Manchester abt 1883. I also have her marr cert to Thomas Henry Hand but cannot find any record of her birth.

Her father's name is Alfred and her mother's name is Catherine (born in Ireland)

Many thanks,

Kelly

Hi Kelly.

Could this be her?

Harriet Shedwick, Jan/Mar quarter 1884, Prestwich District. Vol. 8d Page 342 refers.

It could be the parents only decided on a second baptismal name after registration.

EDIT
Sincere apologies - above should be SEDGWICK.

That's what comes of not wearing my specs.  :(

Hi Finbar,

Thanks for the quick response. I don't think that is her though, that Harriet Sedgwick b1883 is listed on the 1901 census as part of a different family.

Hi tearrn,

Yes, those are her parents. On the 1891 census Catherine also has a son listed as James McGarn, also born in Ireland (half brother to John & Harriet?) so I wonder if she was married before in which case I still don't know her maiden name.
I have also found her & Alfred's marriage listed on the Lancs BMD with the names Catherine McGarn or Catherine Ruling so am further confused as to which is her poss maiden name! Will prob have to send for cert but ideally wanted to find Harriet's birth first to be sure she was def her mother.

Thanks for the info guys.

Kelly

Hi Kelly.

There is a Harriet Ann Shedwick registered at Rochdale in Oct/Dec quarter of 1890, Vol. 8e Page 18 refers.

I know the date is a good eight years out, but perhaps worth bearing in mind.

Good to know, thanks Finbar. Interestingly I can't find any other ref to a Harriet Ann b1890 in the censuses or death records so, who knows, maybe that is her! Not sure how/why an extra 7/8yrs would be added to her age though. Most women try to take years off not add them!  ;)

That looks like her, thanks Manchester! Although the dates don’t make sense. Perhaps a transcription error??
I can’t find baptisms on Lancashire BMD, do you have a link?
Many thanks.
