What does this say??
« on: Sunday 03 April 05 12:30 BST (UK) »
Hi All,
Could SKS please help with this birth cert, I know it says Ann Wallace her X mark Grandmother ?? ?? present.
And was the registrar witnessing her mark or the birth itself?
Thanks

Do you know anything about the mother? It could say Grandmother recorded Inmate present?

I get used to deciphering writing at school so having thought about it I now think it  says Granmother natural and on the second line - (possibly the number 1 ) and Inmate present or possibly Inmate parent

Hi Lesley,
Looking at the rest of the page the last word is definately present (as in present at the birth).
What could be wrong with the mother? I know the father was probably at sea when the child was born,as he registered at least one other of their children.
What sort of inmate would she have been?

How about Grandmother & Nurse & Inmate (meaning she lived at the same address). Seems a bit over the top as regards information but that's what it seems to be to me :)

Ange - where exactly did the birth take place - can you check out the address to see if it is actually a private dwelling and not something else..

I ask this because I have what appears to be the home address of the mother on a birth cert but it is actually the address of the Cambridge Union Workhouse :'(

Hi All,
Thanks for youe replys, your right it does look like either nurse inmate or nurse & inmate.
Suey, I can't find any reference to there being a workhouse or institution at the address on the cert, but if anyone knows if there was one on Virginia Street in Aberdeen that information would be gratefully received.
Thanks for all your help
