Duppa: 1841/61 census look-up please (completed)
« on: Sunday 03 April 05 16:57 BST (UK) »
Could anyone find my DUPPA family in the 1841 and 1861 census?

In 1841 they would be:

Head Thomas Duppa born 1803, Shifnal, Shropshire (age around 38)
Wife Georgiana E. Duppa, born abt 1811, Yardley, Worcestershire or possibly Aston, Birmingham (age 30)
Sarah Jane, daughter, born abt 1836 (age 5)
Georgiana E. daughter, born abt 1838 (age 3)
Caroline Mary, daughter, born abt 1839 (age 2)
and possibly Louisa Matilda, born abt 1841

All the children were born in Shropshire, and in 1841 I think the family were living at Eardington House, Eardington, near Bridgnorth, in the parish of Quatford.

In 1861 Thomas had died, so Georgiana would be head, with two sons added: Brian John Baldwin (born 1847) and Norman George Minshull (born 1849). They had moved from Eardington House by this time, but were still in the Bridgnorth area - I found them in 1871 living on a farm in Chetton.

The name Duppa was more often than not spelled wrong which doesn't help!

I'd be really grateful for help if anyone can spare the time.

Jane

Hi Jane,
Last year I recorded the Monumental Inscriptions at Quatford church for the Shropshire Family History Society.

One memorial lists all your DUPPA family;

In memory of Maria, fourth daughter of The Rev John Wood DUPPA M.A. Born 20 Aug (18_ _?) Died 27 Dec (18_3?)
Matilda MINSHULL, youngest daughter of the Late William MINSHULL Sol of St. Albans, Herts. Died 18 Feb (186?0) aged 16 years.
John (Weyman?) DUPPA. Died 30 July 1830, aged 77.
John …. Edwin B…… DUPPA, son of Thomas DUPPA of Eardington. Died 1906 aged (50 or 59?) years.
Also of Sarah Jane DUPPA, sister of the above,. Died (22 March 1906?) aged (69 years?)
In memory of Thomas DUPPA, Gent of Eardington who died 5th (February?) (1851?) aged (48?) years.
Also of Georgiana Elizabeth, the beloved wife of the above, who died 17 July 1880 aged 70 years.
Also of Georgiana Elizabeth the beloved daughter of the above who died 16th Feb 1876, aged 37 years.
Thomas DUPPA, son of Thomas and Georgiana Elizabeth DUPPA of Eardington. Died 28 Oct 1846 aged 1 year and 11 months.
Elizabeth, wife of The Rev H.R. (CROBAL?) and third daughter of Thomas DUPPA of Bridgnorth. Departed this life 29th October 1848, aged 48.
Thomas DUPPA of Bridgnorth, Gent, departed this life 31 Oct 18_0 aged 79.

DUPPA Douglas is listed on the Roll of Honour inside Quatford church.

I should be able to photograph the memorial if you wish.

Have you searched the A2A web site at http://www.a2a.org.uk
It lists a tremendous amount of information on your DUPPA family that is available at Shropshire Archives.

Hope it helps,
Gwynne.

Hello Gwynne

Thank you once again for your fantastic response; I am so pleased to have this information!

As for John Minshull at the mill – I believe he was Georgiana's brother, and that their parents were George and Sarah Minshull. I have just (in the last 10 minutes!) made contact with a person who has done a lot of research on the Minshull family and he has promised me more information in the next couple of days. This is fantastic as I had hit a brick wall with Georgiana up to this point. What a coincidence that you should also be connected! How are you related? Let me know if you would you like more details of my Minshull family when I get them.

Did you receive my earlier message of thanks containing my e-mail address? I'm not all that confident I have the hang of sending these messages yet!

Very many thanks once again for your help – you're a star!

Best wishes

Jane

Hello Jane,

My name is Sharon and I am a descendant of Caroline Mary Duppa. I have just started looking for information on the Duppa family for my grandmother. I hope you have information you would like to share with me about the Duppa family. As i said, I have just started searching, so any information is welcome!
