Hi,

An 1863 Sydney Directory has on page 179

Furlong, Charles Newman, lodging house, 18 Fort-St, Upper

With the other entries on the page they have the occipation following name so with Furlong being followered by lodging house may mean that he owned or managed a boarding house in Upper Fort St.

Regards

Gerry

Hi there,

City of Sydney Assessment Books are online and start at 1845.   Upper Fort Street should always be there, located in GIPPS ward entries.

1863
18 Upper Fort St
East Side
UNOCCUPIED
Owner/Landlord : Henry Broom (also owner of next door at No 20)
It was a brick house, shingled roof, 2 floors with 6 rooms and rateable value of 60 pounds.

1861
18 Upper Fort St was occupied by William Lee and owned by William Brown who also owned No. 20 at that time.

Sands Directories closing date for publications for next years book was usually October, so probably Charles Newman FURLONG was there for a short time  ;)  There were gold rushes and many people regularly to follow the rushes, either directly as miners or as grocers, butchers, builders etc at the various newly forming villages/towns etc.
