William Henry (Wm Hen) Cliff b1835 occ Architect Surveyor Valuer
and his family

Amelia Smith

Charles Henry Corringham Cliff to be exact - married Amelia Smith 1895
They had two daughters
Mabel
Gladys Louisa
but then they disappear after Mabel’s birth in 1899

Mabel Cliff Birth Mar 1/4 1899 listed as Leeds  9b 520

Mabel Cliff  22nd Feb 1899
Birth address 26 Glossop Terrace Leeds
Dad - Charles Henry Corringham Cliff - County Court Bailiff
Mum Amelia Cliff - formerly Smith

There is one birth in Leeds listed as:
Gladys Cliff - Birth listed as Jun 1/4 1900 Leeds  9b 420 (BUT THIS IS NOT ‘MY’ Gladys Cliff)

Now they could be in London too during the late 1890’s – where I think Amelia was a nurse at Kings Hospital

Did they change their name to Cuff of something :-) ??
Can any one please find them on the 1901.

I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards
Jed

PS - I have posted this as 'England - General' rather than West Yorkshire &/or London because they could be in either place.

Hi Jed

I'm sure there's a whole bunch of us puzzling over this one  ::)  ;D

Do you know what became of any one of them after 1901+
And do you know when/where Amelia was born?

Cheers

Hello & thanks Ambly for your note.

Cor' they've got me!!

Here's a few more notes for you...

Amelia was born in Cleckheaton West Yorkshire to Henry (aka Harry) & Ellen (aka Helen) Smith.
Henry Smith's occupation was a Master house painter.

During 1881 they lived on School Street, Cleckheaton

Henry Smith born c1837 occupation Painter & he employed one man & two boys
Ellen was b c1838 (nee Fleming possibly)
& their children:
George B   b 1863 occ Apprentice Painter
Annie         b 1866
Frank         b 1868 a Scholar
Rawdon     b 1872 a Scholar
Amilia         b 1875 a Scholar (Amelia)
Mary E        b 1878 a Scholar
They were all born in Cleckheaton

22nd March 1902 they were on board the 'Scot' - destination Cape, South Africa

Mrs Cliff aged 27    (Amelia with her children - sadly Charles HC Cliff/dad wasn't with them - where is or was he??)
Miss M Cliff aged 2           (Mabel)
Miss G Cliff aged 1            (Gladys)

Sadly Charles Henry Corringham Cliff wasn't on board, was he in South Africa already, did he arrive after his family, did the 1901 enumerator miss-spell Corringham and or Cliff in some way, or even named them as Corringham-Cliff, may be his surname was miss-spelt on board ship too!?

Good luck & fingers crossed.
Kind regards
Jed
