« on: Wednesday 18 August 10 18:42 BST (UK) »
Hello i am writing to ask if anyone has any information on my 2 x Great Uncle who emigrated to Canada about the 1880s and i wonder what ship he went on.  Matthew was born around 1845 in Bridport Dorset the son of Samuel Symes and Mary Ann Powell.  Wehn we emigrated he was married to a Caroline Talbot i think and had two children Florence and Caroline i know that Florence married a Charles Porte and Caroline a Mr Thompson.  Any information would be greatly appreciated.  Many thanks ellen

I see your dilemma, as in 1911 Amherstburg he says 1889 whereas daughter Carrie says 1884

1891 says daughters are: Caroline & Beatrice ( Florence Beatrice) & Rose born c. 1884 England

Florence B. Symes b. 1880 Dorset, d/o Matthew Symes and Caroline E. Talbot married Charles F. (Franklin on other documents) Porte b. 1878 Ohio US, s/o Thomas F. Porte and Caroline H.B. Rolfe on Oct 17, 1889 Middlesex.

Her entry with her husband on the 1901 Census in the city of London, Ont. gives her year of immigration as 1882.  On the 1911 census they ar in London Twsp, Middlesex (Portt) and the year of immigration is 1883.  So far I haven't found a passenger list for them.

Children for this couple
1.  Margaret Helen Blackwood Porte b. 30 Jan 1904 London Twsp Middlesex  - father still a photographer
Margaret married Aug 20, 1924 at London Ontario to Arthur Edmund Liley, teamster, s/o William Liley and Sarah Lane Hill.
2.  Stillborn female born June 14, 1902  Middlesex
3.  Roy Albert Charles Porte b. Dec 23, 1903 and d. Sep 3, 1904 at 8 mos.
4.  Gordon Charles Porte b. Nov 17 1906 - father now listed as farmer  d. Sept 30, 1907 at 10 mos 13 days.  His birth registration states born in Nov. 1907 but the month of registration is listed as Mar 1907 so it seems logical that the child was born 1906.
5.  Gladys Jean b. Dec 2, 1909 at 5th con. London Twsp Middlesex.  Fther b. Clyde Ohio.  This was a delayed birth registration filed Jan 10, 1966 at London by Gladys Jean Miller
6.  Ralph Charles d. Sept 25, 1911 at 8 mos 13 days Lot 6 Con 5 London Twsp, Middlesex.  1911 census shows his month of birth as Jan.

Florence Beatrice Porte d. Aug 9, 1920 at London Twsp and her parents are given as Matthew Symes and Anna Maria Talbot.  buried at Mount Pleasant.

Caroline Elizabeth Symes d. Jan 7, 1904 - living at 475 Charlotte St.

On the 1911 census Matthew is living with his daughter Carrie and 2 Thompson girls.
There is a delayed birth registration for Pearl Ann Marie James b. Jan 20, 1900 at London Ontario.
The father is William James, trainman of London and Toronto and the mother Rose Symes.

The statement of Mrs. Caroline A. Swanson of Detroit Michigan, aunt of Pearl, states
that Pearl was born at her grandparents home 711 William St.  I was there a day later.  Mother died a month later.  We raised her (Pearl) from about 4 years when the grandmother died.  Father went overseas and we never heard from him again.  She did all her schooling in Amherstburg and took the name Pearl Thompson during her school years.  July 20, 1916 - not sure what is meant by this date then.
This statement dated May 27, 1940.

Birth registration for Grace Thompson b. Sept 5, 1908 Con 1 Lot 25 Westminster Middlesex to Charles William Thompson and Caroline A. Symes.  Father a butcher and living Odell.

1861 British census Matthew is living in the Beaminster registration district of Dorset with his parents

Marriage Mar 1870 Beaminster 5a 565 Matthew Symes and Anna Maria Creed

1871 British Census 26 year old Matthew is living on Wall Farm in Stoke Abbott Dorset with 40 year old wife Anna Maria and his aunt and uncle, retired farmers Benjamin and Charlotte Green.

Death Mar 1875 Beaminster 5a 348 for Anna Maria Symes @ 50 years old

Marriage Sept 1875 Beaminster 5a 651 Matthew Symes and Caroline Elizabeth Talbott

Birth Mar 1877 Beaminster 5a 386 Caroline Adelaide Symes
Birth Jun 1880 Beaminster 5a 401 Florence Beatrice Symes

1881 British census Matthew is living on Swalliots Farm in Stoke Abbot Dorset with Caroline Eliza, Caroline A, Florence and widowed Charlotte Green (aunt)

This ties in the Anna Maria name from Florence's death registration.  Not sure of birth for daughter Rose Symes.

Sorry, I thought I had included the information that it was a late birth registration for Pearl found in the Ontario birth records on Ancestry.  If you don't have access send me a PM and I will forward you a copy.

I never found a marriage for Caroline and haven't found a border crossing or her in the US Census which doesn't mean she isn't there but her name mistranscribed as something I'm not picking up.

You might be able to find some marriages or deaths from this site.
