Verne Citadel Barracks, Portland 1871
« on: Thursday 19 August 10 19:45 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know where I can find out the name of the regiment which was there in the 1871 census? I have someone in my family tree who was listed among all the privates but it doesn't give an indication of the regiment. The highest ranking officer I can see there is a Captain and googling his name hasn't helped.

If you post the names of any officers I can look for them in the Army Lists. Or you can search for them on the London Gazette website. Obviously the ones with exotic names are the best to use.

You need to make sure that you go back a page at a time from your Private, as there may be more than one regiment there, and the officers will be at the head of each section rather than all at the beginning.

Also if there are any children of married men near him, the places of birth can help to confirm the regiment and battalion.

Try this one -it's the first one and he's a Captain - Francis B. O. Cole

I've scrolled back and the only officers are on page 1 so Cole must be the same Regiment (I presume).

There are two other Captains but the surnames are virtually illegible. If you get nowhere with Francis Cole, I'll try and post an image of the other names.

Thank you so much but that's really confusing! My James Sloman died in 1872. Is there any way of finding out where your James Sloman was born?
