I have recently found a family member with an occupation that says "out of place"
What does this mean?

Agreed   :D

Possibly particularly relevant to anyone 'in service' (housemaid, footman, general domestic servant etc)

Servant out of place on a census probably means they didn't live where they worked in service.

A servant "out of place" is a servant that does not currently have employment. Attached is what the British Magazine, Volume 35 (available for free through Google Books) said you should do if you find yourself a servant "out of place."

Somerset County Gazette, Sat 7 Dec 1839
"SERVANTS OUT OF PLACE
A very feeling letter, addressed to us by a servant out of place, in which he complains bitterly of the difficulties experienced by persons of his class in discovering where servants are wanted - the usual advertisement prices being beyond their means - has suggested to us whether we might not open to that numerous class of the poor the advantage so anxiously desired by our humble correspondent, by publishing advertisements of servants wanting places at a price which will come within their small means.
With this view, and being desirous to benefit, as far as we can, a very large and deserving class of the community, we shall henceforth insert the advertisements of servants wanting places for half a crown only. We shall be obliged to all of our readers who are masters or mistresses to make known to their servants the advantages thus extended to them"
