Balfe of South Park Castlerea
« on: Saturday 21 August 10 15:00 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any knowledge of the home of the Balfe family who lived at Southpark House Castlerea.

The house was burned down in 1920-1921.

Thank you

Here's the family in 1911 census in case you haven't seen it-
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Roscommon/Castlereagh/Southpark_Demesne/763320/
According to the scanned images there were 20 windows in the front of the house, had 34 rooms, etc.
Are you looking for any particular information?
There's a Roscommon Family History Society-

Thanks for your prompt response.

I am trying to find some photos of Southpark House as it was in 1920-1921 (before it was burnt).  I know of the Roscommon Family History Society but there seems to be only one photo of the House which was published last May in a local Roscommon paper and I did get a copy of that.

I am a Balfe descendent and my great grandfather was James Joseph Balfe the secretary of the Grand Jury who lived and died in 1872 at Acres House but who was buried in the family vault at Southpark House.

I have been there this year and last and seen the house foundations and location of the vault and other buildings on the Demesne.

Found this but nothing you probably don't already know-
http://www.landedestates.ie/LandedEstates/jsp/estate-show.jsp?id=622

Not sure where archives for that area would be located but nearest main library would be worth contacting.

Google Images brings up lots of houses for sale, etc. but there is a photo on this site (might be the picture you've already found)-

I have seen the Landed Estates stuff before and the article with pictures from Roscommon History was created by me!!

I am just hoping someone might have some sort of picture somewhere of the House as it was.

Thank you so much for taking the trouble to respond and for your help.

Regards

Last idea- have you tried writing to local newspaper and appealing for photos of more information?

I did a search on
http://ixquick.com/do/metasearch.pl

I searched for “Southpark Demesne”.

Good results including a photo of the house on the site below, plus a link to the Newspaper Article about the house.

I got the photo from the Messenger last year but have today  asked the Roscommon People if they have anything - will let you know what I hear.

Thanks again
