Knockholt War Memorial
« on: Monday 23 August 10 17:23 BST (UK) »
Hello.
I am hoping that someone is in a position to take a few of photographs of the War memorial for me. I have seen the photograph on the Knockholt village site, but found the quality deteriorated when I attempted to enlarge the section displaying the particular name of William G Bourne, a soldier whom I am at present researching.
                             Regards,
                                      Scobie

Hi Grandarog.
Thanks for directing me to the Kent History Forum. What an excellent site! I have immediately added it to my Favourites and will be wandering through it in future.
There are some very suitable photographs on that site, plus the one you supplied is just what I am after. I was surprised that the pictures did not match the one on the Knockholt Village site, a plaque, so I therefore assume that that one is an old photograph of what was the original memorial.
                       Again, many thanks,
                                         Scobie

Hi Scobie,
Glad to help ,we aim to please when poss. I think the plaque on the Village Website is probable a bronze in the church itself at a guess!I assume you meant this pic.

Hello,

Are you a relative of this man? I’ve just purchased a postcard home sent by him.

Best wishes,

Matt

Hello everyone.
An unexpected return to an old post! When I started this post in 1910 I was in the process of researching those men that I could find with a connection to Warehorne parish, and who died whilst serving in World War 1. William Bourne was one of these (although his name does not appear on our local memorial), and though I live in the parish, I am not a related to him. After the initial rush of information (hopefully), one does not expect to hear a great deal more as time passes. So the discovery of the postcard home from him is fascinating – something actually handled by William Bourne himself! If it is at all possible, Matt, it would be marvellous if you were able to send a scan of each side that I could add to my file on William. However, I quite understand if you would prefer not to. It is just nice to know that it exists.
Thanks to all who have helped me over the years,
Scobie
