It is, indeed, terrific news.  ;D

But, it leaves us first-gen Canadians and expats a little in left field. :(

I've commented on the article on the Kent Messenger site to learn if there are any plans to open the archive to a wider field.

I saw a comment on another forum I belong to that "For people in the UK this will be a free search but there will be a small charge for anyone overseas."
I don't know how official that is, or its source. It will be interesting to see if you get a response from KM.

Hi Scintilla,

Thanks for the wink.  I hadn't noticed that in the article in the online version of the announcement.  Haven't heard yet from anyone concerning my comment on the article but I also realized, when I came back to this forum thread that Lesley's contact details are at the beginning of it.  So, I am going to try contacting her directly and see what happens.

I'll post the answer, if suitable, on this thread.

Regards,
Susan

Hi,

I've now heard back from Lesley, who advises that a charge of GB4.99 will be levied to people outside of the U.K., which will allow 5 days of searching.  What I don't have the answer to is if there is going to be a limit placed on the number of searches and download of images in that same time frame.

Regards,
Susan

more good news for those of you with ancestors from Kent - the Kent Messenger Group are putting thousands of pages from their newspaper archive online this month, and they're going to be free to search for everyone in the UK. The archive will include issues of the South Eastern Gazette (forerunner of the Kent Messenger) from 1852-1912;
