John Evans
« on: Wednesday 25 August 10 15:12 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information regarding John Evans who married Anne George on 13th April 1910 in St Mary's Church, Abbey Cwmhir.

I know some of Anne's family history but have not been able to find out anything about her husband John Evans.

If anyone can help I would be very grateful.

You appear to have a copy of their marriage cert - what was John's age at that time and what was his fathers name and occupation

Have you looked for them on the 1911 census to establish his birthplace - with a name like John Evans in Wales you will need every scrap of info you can get

Thanks CarolW

John Evans was 24 when his married.  He was working as a farm labourer at Cefn Pawl, Abbey Cwmhir and his father was Thomas Evans (no occupation given)

Alice Anne George was 29 and was living at Church House and her father was Thomas George, Gamekeeper.

The marriage was witnessed by Lucy Emily George.

The only 1891 entry was John K Evans b 1885 Llandrindod Radnor - father Thomas mother Annie

The 1901 has a number of John Evans working in Radnor but not born there with similar birthyears

Without his birthplace it would be guesswork.  Although he married in Radnor, he may not necessarily have been born there

Dear CarolW

I have now looked up John Evans on the 1911 Census:

George, Sarah, Head, Widow, F, 68, Charing and Washing, Radnor Abbey Cwmhir
Evans, John   Son-in-Law, Married, M, 25, Waggoner on Farm, Shropshire Church Stretton
Evans, Alice Ann, Daughter, Married, F, 31 - , Abbey Cwmhir Radnor
John Thomas Evans, Grandson, M, 3 months

You were right he was not born in Radnor but in Church Stretton, Shropshire.

Hi

That's the first hurdle over but now we have another two!

Neither the 1891/1901 England or Welsh census have a John Evans in that age range b Church Stretton.  I have searched birthyears 1885 +- 2yrs so 1883-1887

Church Stretton was also the registration district for births and freebmd has no John Evans born in that RD between 1883-1887

There are 4 births but in each case, John is the middle name - not the main name
