Llanfihangel Nant Bran: Evan Pugh father of Samuel Pugh christened 1794
« on: Thursday 26 August 10 00:35 BST (UK) »
The National Library of Wales did a Bishop's transcript search for me on Samuel Pugh christened Llanfihangel Nant Bran in 1794. The entry shows that his father was Evan Pugh, but that is all the detail there is. I have found an Evan Pugh baptised 1751 in Llandeilo'r Fan, (Kyle Williams web site) but I don't know how to cross-check. These are different parishes and I don't know if a family would be likely to show up in both. There must have been a few Evan Pugh's in that area of Brecknockshire! There are no Samuel Pugh's in Llandeilo'r Fan...

Please help me if you can, I am reluctant to proceed without more information.

Thanks again

Need help to find all the Pughs in Llanfihangel Nant Bran!

I have spent a lot of time doing searches of the Pugh families in Llanfihangel Nant Bran using the 1841 census, and various other Internet data sources. There are a lot of Pughs there and I am getting very confused as to how many different Pugh families there were at that time. I have good proof that Samuel Pugh christened 1794 is my ancestor, and that an Evan Pugh was his father.

I have identified Thomas Pugh born 1785 and Anne Pugh born 1790 as Samuel's siblings, both from Llanfihangel Nant Bran.

I think that Evan Pugh born 1790 in Llandeilo'r Fan may have been another one of Samuel's brothers. This is because his father was also called Evan, born 1747 in Llandeilo'r Fan.

This is all getting very complicated and I need to have a list of all the Pugh's living in Llanfihangel Nant Bran on some date (say 1841 or 1851) in order to sort this out.  Kyle Williams has already published comprehensive data for Llandeilo'r Fan so that helps a lot.

Can someone let me know how to get that list.. I would be very grateful. The ancestry databases won't accept Llanfihangel Nant Bran, Llanfihangel Nant Brane, or Llanfihangelynantbrane as place names.

Thanks  :)

Thank you very much for your reply. The time lines are about what I figured out, but I am  not familiar with the reconstruct process you suggest.. What process do I use, and on what database/

Looking forward to getting more information!

To Garfydd:

There is an Evan Pugh christened in Llandeilo'r fan in 1751, and a record for a marriage between Evan Pugh and Joan Jones in Llanfihangel Nant Bran in 1779. I have no idea if they are related to Samauel Pugh born 1794, although the dates seem feasible.

Cheers

:)

I obtained a copy of the will of David Pugh, Cordwainer, Llanfihangel Nant Brane, 1826, Ref BR/1826/37 with bequests to his mother Joan, two brothers Samuel and Thomas, and to three sisters Catharine, Anne, and Mary. On that basis I am sure that Evan Pugh and Joan Jones were Samuel Pugh's parents. David died shortly after making his will, which was drawn up by Rees Powell, also executor, and witnessed by Morgan Morgans and Thos. Price. The will also provided a bequest to Jenkin Jenkins, the son of Catharine and Jenkin Jenkins.

Further information on how the Pugh's got to Llanfihangel would be interesting.

David Pugh, who christened an Evan Pugh in 1751, Ann in 1754, and John in 1757 in Landeilo'r Fan may have been the father of "our" Evan Pugh.  However the same Parish has a record of Evan Pugh christening a son,  Evan Pugh, in 1781. Census records show that this Evan had a thriving family for many years in Llandeilo'r Fan, none of them from Llanfihangel Nant Bran.

Things do get confusing!

Any further data will be really appreciated!

Cheers,

Llanfi
