HILLMANs of West Grinstead and Steyning
« on: Thursday 26 August 10 12:43 BST (UK) »
Hi there.

I'm looking to find out about my wife's ancestors, the HILLMANs.

Specifically, I'm looking for Chesman Hillman born abt 1749 in West Grinstead.  I'm looking for his parents / antecedants.

We believe Chesman Hillman married a Mary in Steyning, West Sussex, but we cannot find an official reference for this or Mary's maiden name.  Hence,we cannot find her parents.  We're assuming she was a local girl.

Their daughter Phoebe, was baptised in Steyning.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Alan

Hi
I will move this to Sussex.  West Grinstead is not that near to East so that may be a red herring.   There are lots of Hillman entries there and in Steying though.  There is no marriage for a Chesman Hillman on the Sussex Marriage Index.  When was Phoebe baptised?  How do you have 1749 as the dob for Chesman?
Regards
Andrea
Edit - clicking on the batch number on the IGI entry for Phoebe brings up two other daughters Jane and Betty in 1777 and 1779 and variants on Chesham's name which may help.
