Deciphering place of enlistment
« on: Friday 27 August 10 18:36 BST (UK) »
I have asked this question on the Armed Forces board before, but no one has been able to offer a suggestion as to what has been written as the place of enlistment on the attached army service record.

The record itself is in poor condition and the writing has faded in places. In particular, the place of enlistment is very difficult to read on the extract below. His place of birth is clearly shown as Leeds in the county of York, but I can't read the line below. I think the enlistment county might be Surrey, as it seems to end in 'ey', although why he would have enlisted there when I'm not aware of any connection outside Leeds is beyond me. I can't make out the town at all.

Can anyone with better eyes than mine make sense of it?

Peter

I'll go back and try those other words

I *think* the enlistment place begins with an F  - still trying the county though it looks like it ends in "ey"  and I'm blowed if I can make out the rest of it.

The only county I can see which ends in ey is Surrey.

My grandfather lived in Suffolk, but his enlistment papers during WW1 show that he enlisted in Surrey.  I am assuming that the conscripts were transported to a central point where the form-filling took place, uniforms issued and suchlike.  Which would explain why someone born in Leeds ended up signing on the dotted line in a completely different part of the country.

The first letter of the place could be F or T - compare it with the T at the beginning of Twenty fifth. So possibly Ta or Fa ending in ... ? Initially I thought d but when comparing it with the d in Leeds it looks different - no loops!

Also is it David or Drummer?

Tricky!!

Maybe I've been looking at this too long  ;D :P but is the very last word (which is barely visible) Fusiliers??  The word in front I can't make out.

I've tried adjusting contrast etc, but still can't read the placename or County. I think the last line looks like ..for.. Limited Services.
