1769 Hibernia Coin
« on: Saturday 28 August 10 17:26 BST (UK) »
Hi,
My husbands great uncle left him a collection of old coins and one of them in particular is quite old.
It looks like a copper coin with the inscription HIBERNIA 1769, GEORGIVS III REX. There is a harp and crown on one side and silhouette on the other. Would this coin have been used in Ireland at the time and what would its value have been.
Also, does anyone know the best way to clean it?

regards

According to
http://www.predecimal.com/britishcoinsidentification.htm
and
http://www.coins.nd.edu/ColCoin/ColCoinIntros/Br-IrishCopper.intro.html

These coins were used in Ireland but that there were different denominations. The 2nd site refers to a Hibernia Irish Halfpenny  (there were 240 pennies to the pound)

Hi Wicklow Way

If you intend to sell it, don't clean it....you will only reduce its value.

Hi km1971 and Hibee,

Yes, thats the coin and we have no intention of selling it. Was just interested in finding out about the history of it. Thanks for all the advice.
