1695 Will - Cornwall
« on: Sunday 29 August 10 00:37 BST (UK) »
I need help to decide just one word.

“.... my Lands and tenements in ?kerr.? in the parish of madderne and Countie aforesaid
.... therty pounds unto my executors here after named
.... my daughter forty pounds to be payd with in to yeares after my decease”

The Will is of Thomas LANYON of Sancreed, in 1695.
I guess the parish is Madron, Cornwall.

Can anyone help me. please?

Regards
Grantley

Thankyou Hephzibah,

The first letter was throwing me.

I did find confirmation of it, as a "k" in the following "sick"

I don't know about the last bit being "ow".

On the modern map there is a place called Kerris, not far from Sancreed Drift. However, it is in the parish of  Paul. Could there have been a change in parish boundaries?
I think it may have to be guess work with the letters following Kerr..!

Thankyou for your suggestions.

With the various spellings & obscure locations, I might not be able to pinpoint this place.

The closest that I can get is 50 years previous, he inherited the "use" of a tenement in Bussulloe [Bosullow] and was bequeathed "the land belonging to Lanion [Lanyon] Mill" in Maddern [Madron].

20 years later, all the BD&M records put him in the parish of St Buryan, except this mention in his Will of the "tenements in ?kerr.? in the parish of madderne.

Hope you don't mind me asking but are you researching the Lanyon family, because they are the people I am researching, too?
There is a Lanyon farm in the area (has a great tea room ;D) so could the mill have been on their land?
