To recap

The Adoptive parents marry in 1915.

This child was born in the Workhouse in1920

The Adoptive parents have their own children c1925

They adopt this child in 1935

They give this Adopted child the name of his Adoptive father :-\

The child was Adopted by them in 1935, ten years after having their own children

There is a big gap between the marriage and them having their own children 10 years ???  Maybe he was in the Forces 1914-1919, could they have split up and the adoptive mother had this child by someone else.?

The child that you found under another name in the Workhouse, can you spot this name being used in either of the Adoptive parents families.

If this couple's own children were boys, have they given them family names?

An Adoptive child being given the fathers name is cause for thought if he already had boys from his own marriage.

There is also the possibility that the child was a base born child of one of their siblings.

Hi Ambers,

My Gramps was born in 1920. I have no info of name or place just Date of birth and copy of his adoption certificate.

I have found a child born in a house locally, who was born on right date to a person unconnected to my family, this person appears to have put said child in workhouse, and moved on with their life, moving away and marrying and having another child before dying in 1930's

There is only speculation that my Gramps was in the workhouse from a comment made by a relative who will now not discuss the matter, which led me to search the workhouse records leading me to above child.

Sorry, I know I am terrible at explaining myself .

All of your facts about adoptive parents are correct. Adoptive father was all over world with Army over many years including India and Europe so away for long periods I expect.

I am sorry, I do not know what base born means?  I will look around the family info I have and see if I can find any more information.

Thanks Ambers and Carol and Carol  :D

Have just been reading this thread and can't help wondering if 'adoptive' father had fathered a child with another woman after his marriage and maybe didn't find out until much later.

I was wondering about that too, having named this adoptive child after himself on adoption in 1935.

I am thinking the same, just trying to trawl through the bmd records for info, I feel a long search coming on  :-\

I wonder if he did and something happened to the birth mother, would he adopt the child in order to ensure his "rights" were secured in future  ???

Would it be possible to have a second family?
