Can you find the death of the mother who put this child in the Workhouse? Was his adoption after her death, if so the adoptive father might have been aware of this child all along and decided to adopt him.

Hello....

Have you thought of contacting Birkenhead library ?

They will probably be able to tell you who was living there in 1920, and possibly if the house was used as a nursing home. I have been in touch with them in the past, and they were very helpful.

As long as a search takes no more than 20 minutes, they do not charge.

birkenhead.ref@wirral-library.net

Good Luck in your search

Hi

Don't know if this is still required or not but I have a 1920 directory for Hoylake.

There is an entry for a Charles Benjamin Good at "Cintra", Birkenhead Road.

Hi....

Charles Benjamin Good, was born in 1877, and he was a Steam Ship Agent, and he gave his address as "Cintra" on his many voyages overseas. I have found his death in 1963.

He sailed many times to Brazil, and travelled there 4th September 1920.

He married Eleanor Thorpe in 1911. They had a son Arthur in 1913, and a daughter Mary in 1914
They sailed to Brazil also, returning from one trip on 1st April 1921.

I think these particular houses, on Birkenhead Road, were large, privately owned houses, so I don't think it was part of a workhouse.

Hope you have made some development Sam.

Hi,
Haven't been on here for ages. Thank you for all the wonderful help.
We have managed to work out where exactly the house is, and have found further relations of my Grandfather.
I am waiting for paperwork to confirm some information.
Thank you so much for all the wonderful help you have given. It was very satisfying to reach the end of the search.  :)
