The Rev. Owen John Davies
« on: Wednesday 01 September 10 16:28 BST (UK) »
The Rev. Owen John Davies was my great grandfather.  He was a Welsh Anglican vicar, married to an American woman called Caroline Stoddard Crocker.  They lived in the UK for a period in the early 1900s.  He "disappeared" before they were due to sail back to Boston.  If anyone has any information on my great grandfather, I would be most appreciative.  He had two sisters - my uncle remembers having tea with then in London once when he visited the UK.  This is a mystery that has never been solved (although I suspect that it was a marriage that had gone sour and rather than divorce, my great grandparents decided he would "disappear").

It would be worth having a look at the Crockfords Clerical Directories to see if his career in the UK can be tracked, you might ask the Lambeth Palace Library to check:
http://www.lambethpalacelibrary.org

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html shows their marriage in MA which gives his parents as Thomas H. and Jane and his birthdate as about 1862.

Thank you jorose and t mo.  I shall look to see what I can find.  I would imagine Lambeth Palace might be a good place to start.  Shall have to do some digging on the information you both found.  Thank you!

Hi,
As well as looking in Crockford for the years he lived, it can be worthwhile checking the couple of Crockford after the clerics death- if you know when that was- as they can publish a summary of career and comment.

Good luck.
charlotte

The first Rector at The Church of The Holy Spirit in Lake Forest, Illinois was named Owen John Davies. He served as Rector from 1902 to 1904. Davies was born in England and served as chaplain at Kenyon College before joining CHS. In 1904 he submitted his resignation in response to a charge of plagiarism. His resignation was not accepted at first by the Vestry. A few days later, Davies went missing and was discovered wandering the streets of Chicago. Davies offered his resignation due to ill health and it was accepted this time. Nothing further was known of his life after 1904.

Hi.  I am in Edinburgh visiting from the US for about a week and just thought to 'goggle'  the name of my great-grandfather and found this description which matches very closely to what I know of him.  There is a mystery in the US about what happened to him.  I have lots of information about his wife, Caroline Stoddard Davies including her Master's Thesis written for Wellesley and several articles about her career at Jackson College (the women's college of Tuft's University).  Would love to be in contact with the two posters who I have found on this forum so far.  I had not heard of any stories about Chicago, but know if another church in Haddonfield New Jersey where my Grandfather (Roland)and his sister (Jane)were born and baptized.  I also know of the Kenyon College connection and have even gotten a photo from their archives.

To RSTmorton!,

I'm so sorry I didn't see this before! Your grandfather's sister, Jane, is my mother's mother. We're cousins! If you should happen to see this, please respond and we will find a way to get in touch. So exciting to find someone else in the family!

All the best,
Martha
