Hi John - Yep saw that one. He is listed as nephew maybe an idea to find out the association with the uncle.  As James is only 8 at the time may have just been told... his mothers name was Elizabeth..have you tried using wild cards on SP.
Don't give up hope yet  ;) early days, you never know what comes out in the wash  ;D

Going o the 1881 census and noting that James Gillies was born in Alloa 1832, his daughter Janet born Alloa 1864, and his son Robert 1865 Menstrie, so they were local Clacks family.  Maybe worth spending a few credits on SP to find the Gillies family i.e. brothers or sisters of James.

Maybe someone else may have a better idea, I have gone through IGI for Gillies of Clacks but not much joy there.

For what it's worth  :D 1841 census Menstry..and that's all the adds states.

John Gilllies dob 1796 Clacks.
Janet his wife 1811 Clacks.
Children are....
Robert 1827, Isabella 1829, James 1831, John 1833, Marion 1835, Janet 1839, Margaret 1849.
All born Clackmannanshire.
Interesting to note there is also a John McLaren born 1821 sadly only says Scotland.
Maybe a link there somewhere.

There is also an 1851 census also at Menstrie..for Janet Gillies who is now Housekeeper ?? with an added child George age 7 and a Peter Norman age 1 (grandson).

Best of luck  ;) regards Patvp

Just a  thought ... have you tried the Catholic Records on SP??  I found my gt grandmother on my dads side in there, didn't even realise  she was Catholic so it may be worth a shot.
