Shadrach Grace/Jackson

Hi

Shadrach is my GGG Grandfather born Whipsnade 1825.

The mystery surrounds a change of surname. On his daughter Eliza's wedding certificate they both have "Grace" as their surname, after 1860 however, the family name changes and all census' after this date declare the surname to be "Jackson" I can only suppose they were trying to avoid detection perhaps for debt etc, has anyone else come across this  - or do you have Shadrach in your tree and have already solved the mystery??

Have you traced Shadrach's parents? It's possible his family used both names.

There seems to be a Ebenezer Jackson Grace and an Edwin Jackson Grace who married in Luton; their father is a Thomas b. abt 1821 Whipsnade and they also appear on the 1861 and 1871 censuses as "Jackson".

JOHN GRACE
30 MAY 1803 Studham, Bedford


It looks like Thomas marries Mary Ann GEORGE,

Marriage:  06 May 1820   Whipsnade, Bedford


This would fit as in 1861 Shadrach JACKSON has an Aunt and Uncle, Ann and Thomas GEORGE living with them.
 



The 1841 census has,

So it looks like the GRACE/JACKSON query could come from Shadrach's father Thomas. Do you have Shadrach's marriage certificate to check who is father was?

I know this thread is old, I bookmarked it years ago and just joined, then found it again.

Did you ever find out a definitive reason for the Jackson/Grace name change?  We have been puzzling over it on this side of the pond as well.  Shadrack was my 2x great grand uncle, his younger sister Emma was my GG Grandmother.

I'm not related and was just trying to help Jeannie68 find some info. so I haven't searched any further. It looks like she hasn't been here since 2013 and never posted whether she got Shadrach's wedding certificate.

If you haven't found a baptism for Shadrach either as GRACE or JACKSON yet I would suggest that you get the marriage cert. just to confirm that Thomas was his father, and if there is any other info. that might help. The 1841 census doesn't show relationships so it is possible that he isn't.

Thanks Daisy.  Unfortunately for me, I am a good 10 hour flight from Heathrow, so I'll have to wait to find out.  I had a couple of theories, that they were a couple, had kids, then got married.  Emma Grace has had a lot written about her, and I find her referred to as Emma Grace in all of the LDS literature on her, except my g grandfather's eulogy, from 1948, where she is referred to as 'Emma Jackson.'  That was a bit more than 50 years after she died.
I am very interested in these families that populate this area around Beds/Bucks/Herts, as they seemed to have been there generations, and a chunk of them, Graces, Austins, Webbs, Hugheses, Turners and a few more got swept up in Mormonism and left for Utah over a 20 or so year period.
