This lad? (names reversed)

Births Mar 1900

Whysall  James John H B    Huntingdon  3b 288

Theres a plain James in 1901, staying with parents James & Cissy, Grandmother Caroline in Nottingham - but his PoB is stated as Derby.

RG13; Piece: 3171; Folio: 72; Page: 11 Nottingham - 300, Meadow Lane

Caroline E Whysall 60 Head Widow born Salop, Bridgnorth: Monthly Nurse
James E Whysall 23 son born Derbyshire, 'Castle'(?) Greasley: Brass Moulder
Cissy Whysall 23 Dau (inLaw) born Leic, Ashby de la Zouche
Henry Cook 48 Son in Law born Notts: Coal Miner
Esther A Cook 29 Dau born Derby, Codnor: Saltpacker
James Whysall 1 Grandson born Derby
William H Pitwood 7 grandson ditto
Philip E Pitwood 5 grandson Coalville
James A Pitwood 3 grandson Derby

Thomas Smith 22 Lodger

Given that he is James -E- this may be his marriage - I guess Cissy is a petname .. so maybe its Eliza Burton his spouse?

Marriages Jun 1899

Blount  Emmanuel Buxton    Derby  7b 1130
Burton  Eliza     Derby  7b 1130
Redfern  Mary Ann     Derby  7b 1130
Whysall  James Edwin     Derby  7b 1130

Have you tried the 1911 census?

Hi

Very many thanks for the info, this looks highly likely (I made a mistake and the christian names are James John).

I am very curious about the name Burton.  James John's grandson's middle name is Burton, so Cissy/Eliza Burton looked like a good fit, but I have checked Caroline too and her maiden name was Burton as well!?

Unfortunately I don't have access to the 1911 census, but I shall make a new post and see if anyone is able to help.

Once again, many thanks for taking the time and trouble to help.

Best wishes
Valerie

Unfortunately I don't have access to the 1911 census,

Everyone has free access to the 1911 index at http://www.1911census.co.uk/

It costs a few pounds to buy the minimum number of credits to view the transcript of the full entry

Eliza Burton (shown on the Derby District marriage) was certainly from Ashby dlZ

The 1891 census of Litchurch parish, Derby shows the family - RG12; Piece: 2735; Folio 42; Page 29

John Burton 43 Head of household born Ashby dlZ: a Coach Body Maker
Eliza Burton 39 Wife born Staffs, West Bromwich
Joseph Burton 16 son Litchurch
John Henry Burton 15 son ditto
Eliza Burton 13 dau Ashby dlZ
Oliver Burton 11 son Litchurch
Hephzibah E Burton 9 dau ditto

1881 RG11; Piece: 3400; Folio: 65; Page: 32 Derby St Werburgh, 40 Belgrave Street

(somewhat mistranscribed as Eliya Barton !)

Turning to Caroline E. - FreeBMD has 2 seperate original images - both defining the same Basford District Marriage in 1861, but one shows her as BURTON and one as BARTON - need to go back to the 1851 census of Bridgnorth I guess .....

Marriages Sep 1861

Barton Caroline Elizabeth    Basford  7b 146    (actual different original image transcribed
Burton  Caroline Elizabeth     Basford  7b 146    than this one !)
Wardle  Mary     Basford  7b 146
WEBSTER  James     Basford  7b 146
Whysall  Henry Fletcher     Basford  7b 146

..... which does confirm the name as BURTON (in Staffs - HO107; Piece: 2019; Folio: 49; Page: 16 - Wolverhampton)

Hi guys

I had mistakenly assumed my thread was finished and haven't checked roots chat for a while, so have only just found your really helpful responses.

Grateful thanks for taking the trouble to help and for the excellent info you have sent to me.

Hi

It's all a bit odd, I didn't get topic replies either to alert me that I had responses to reply to?
