**COMPLETED** 1891 census look-up Please
« on: Sunday 05 September 10 15:53 BST (UK) »
Can someone please help with an 1891 census lookup for the Taylor family in Dundee.  Father Robert Taylor, wife Margaret and son George born 1884.  Scotlands people shows four possibles.  I've viewed them but none seem to fit the bill.   :(

Thanks

Jim

Hi Jim

What other info do you have on the family? Do you know where young George born in 1884? Do you have father Robert's occupation? Sorry for all the questions - all this info will help to hopefully find them in the census indexes. Have you got George's parents' names form a marriage or death entry for George. Have you tried finding a marriage entry for parents to find out more about them?

From a birth year c. 1884, the closest I can see is a George aged 6, born in Aberlour, Banff and living with there with family in 1891. Father Robert is down as a railway agent.

Let us know and I can post the full entry if relevant.

Are you expecting a Dundee family?

There is also this family in 1891/1901, no father showing, just mother Margaret:

1891 - everyone born in England except for George:

Margaret Taylor 38 b. England
Maggie C Taylor 17
Hellen Taylor 16
Luke C Taylor 14
David Taylor 12
William Taylor 10
George Taylor 7 b. Dundee

Address: 47 Union St, Dundee

1901:

Margaret Taylor 47
Helen Taylor 26
Luke C Taylor 24
George Taylor 17, Appren Ship Joiner

Address: 3 North Church Street, St Andrews Angus

Monica

Added: Can't be the right family - the 1881 census down in Gateshead, Durham shows father as David  :-\

MonicaLesl Thanks for replying, I really appreciate it.

Yes I am expecting a Dundee family.  George (my gg father) was born in Dundee.  He married in 1904 and at the time the marriage certificate stated that he was employed in the Jute industry, as were most of the inhabitants of Dundee.  His address in 1904 was listed as 21 Lawrence Street, Dundee.  His father Robert was deceased at the time of Georges marriage to Margaret McLaren.  His Mother is Margaret Knott, although the certificate is difficult to read and I'm not 100% with her surname. I think his father Robert's occupation looks like Harbour Porter (although my impression could be wrong).

As far as I'm aware there is no English connection to  my family until I married my wife.  I should perhaps put best day of my life in case she reads this  ;)

Thanks again.

Struggling to see a marriage for parents, Robert and Margaret Kno* or a death for a Margaret Knott/Taylor in Scotland.

Have you been able to find anything for them?

Hi jmg1893

This could be a long shot but here goes.  I looked at the marriage certificate and thought Margaret's maiden name could be Pratt not Knott.

There's a marriage entry for a Robert Taylor and Margaret Pratt in Cupar, Fife.

I found a Taylor family in the 1881 census living in Burntisland

Robert Taylor 21   b. Musselburgh
Margaret Taylor 21  b. Cupar
Robert Taylor 3  b. Springfield
Cecilia Taylor 1  b. Burntisland

Then traced same family living in Linlithgow (minus husband Robert) on the 1891 census, with a new addition - George born abt 1884.

Margaret Taylor 31
Robert Taylor 13
William Taylor 9
Celleia Taylor 11
George Taylor 7  b. Burntisland
Margaret Taylor 1

And here is George up in Dundee with mother Margaret, living at 2 Small's Wynd, occupation Jute Preparer in 1901...

Margaret Taylor 42  b. Cupar
George Taylor 18 b. Burntisland
Margaret Taylor 12

Do you think this could be him?

Jokdy,

Many thanks for the reply.  It may well be, as my mother has always said that there is a Fife connection to her family but she wasn't sure who it was.  They were Miner's in the Fife coal fields.  I've looked again at the certificate and you could be right with the surname.  I'll look into it tomorrow.

Sincere thanks

Jim

No probs Jim

From the marriage entry for George and Margaret, his mother Margaret is named as Mann previously Taylor, so she married again.

There's a death entry for her in 1930 (Dundee), widow of 1st, Robert Taylor and 2nd, Andrew Mann - parents listed as William Pratt and Cecilia Russell.

Good luck!
