Captain Patrick COLLINS: Australian Navy
« on: Sunday 05 September 10 19:57 BST (UK) »
I'm hoping to find some information about my Uncle Paddy.......Patrick Collins was born 1916+ not sure where. I think he was brought up in Ireland by his aunt Bridget Collins, married name Foley
He joined the Royal Navy and was based in Gosport, Hampshire.England in the 1950s.
He married a Patricia and had a girl and a boy born in the 1950s
I believe the family immigrated to Australia late 1950s or 1960s but don't know where they lived
I think Paddy was a Captain in the Australian Navy.
I think he retired to the Broken Hill area of New South Wales.
I would appreciate any help that anyone could give me in researching my family history.
Thank you

Are you able to tell us his parents names and whereabouts he was born?

Also did he have any middle names.

thanks Jenn

Hello Jenn.
Thanks for replying.
Patrick's mother was Catherine Collins from Dublin, I think. She was unmarried. I believe she came to UK to avoid the Magdalene laundries in Ireland. I don't know where  and when Paddy was born.
My Gran never spoke about her past but she took me to visit Uncle Paddy, Aunt Pat and the children in Gosport, Hampshire, England in the 1950s. It was a great adventure for me as we lived in Scotland and Gosport was so far away!
Paddy and Pat came home from Australia several times, by boat I think.
I found a death for a Patricia Collins age 50, died in 1964, buried in Wellington Law Cemetery NSW and wondered if this was my Aunt Pat. The notice says birth unknown.
Regards
Agnes

The National Archives (australia) has the following immigration entry which looks possible but I can't see a mention of wife or children, and you say he was in Gosprt in the 50s.  ???

Patrick COLLINS, born in Dublin, Ireland on 27 August 1922; Mother: Mrs James COLLINS - Application dated: Shanghai, 2 April 1946
(Naval Service No.: D/JX 7305856)

COLLINS Patricia
Father Nicholas  Mother Mary
District Orange

A possible birth if Patrick was born in England however there is a 2nd given name initial on this birth registration :-\

COLLINS Patrick J  Reg Dec qtr 1919  Berwick:  Cumberland, Northumberland/Westmorland.  10b/1085
Mother's Maiden Surname - COLLINS

According to the death notice on 8 May 2008, Patrick and Patricia had been married for 63 years so married c1945.  I have searched the 1944 and 1945 marriages in the UK and so far not having much luck.

Cheers

I wonder if there is a funeral notice for Patrick Collins  that would match up with the family tribute which was dated the 5/8/2008?

might lead  to establishing this Patrick Collins as a strong possibility
