Albert E RICHARDS Redruth 1900
« on: Monday 06 September 10 08:50 BST (UK) »
Dear kind researchers,

My father did not belay any information as to his past, he died when I was a small child and so did my mother.   All I can go on is this information:

My father was born Redvers James Richards 28 Aug 1927 in Cornwall.  I know he had brothers (*).  All in the Redruth area.

I think the maiden name of my GGMother was Dunstan.

The only other information I have is a small photograph that reads Granpa Edward Richards Deli approx 1919 - so I am assuming that he enlisted into the Army around that time.

The snippet that I have also which may help is that Albert Ernest Richards born c1900 married a Sara(h) Jayne Oliver in Mar 1921 in Redruth.

Any help of information would be wonderful.

Nicholas

Here's your Father's Birth Index entry, you are correct about his Mother's Maiden name, altho he is a bit older than you thought.

Births Sep 1926

Richards  Redveres J  Mothers Maiden = Dunstan  Redruth  5c 276

I cant see a Richards to Dunstan marriage in Cornwall back as far as 1912 - altho perhaps she was a widow when marrying, so Dunstan appears as a Maiden name on a Birth entry - is this why you mention the Albert E Richards to a Sarah J Oliver in 1921 ?

The accepted wisdom in this situation is to obtain the Birth Certificate to reveal parents full name and then work back via BMDs and Census.

Added - can you explain the word Deli in this context please ? and is it Edward or Albert E ?

Deli I assume is Deli India.

Albert Ernest Richards was my Fathers Uncle and Edward Richards is pictured in India in about 1919.   As my father was born in Aug 1926 I assume Edward Richards married a Dunstan?

ah ok, now youve filled in the blanks a bit (who was an Uncle etc), this is most likely your Grandfather Edward and brother Albert in the 1901 census:-

RG13; Piece: 2244; Folio: 6; Page: 3 Camborne parish within Redruth District

John Richards 27 Head of Household born Cornwall, Wrendron: a Tin Miner
Mary Richards 27 Wife born Camborne
Edward J Richards 7 son ditto
Albert E Richards 1 son ditto

I still cant see a marriage on FreeBMD between partners called Richards & Dunstan in the right timeframe.

The earliest birth I see to a Richards / Dunstan combination is 1921, Truro.

Have you no idea at all what your grandmothers christian name was ?

This is the only EDWARD J RICHARDS marrying in Redruth District (one other in Camelford, but 1924):-

Marriages Sep 1914

Nancarrow  Lottie to Richards  Redruth  5c 338
Pascoe  Benjamin G  Stevens  Redruth  5c 338
Richards  Edward J  to Nancarrow  Redruth  5c 338
Stevens  Beatrice M  Pascoe  Redruth  5c 338

I'll see if I can find out if Nancarrow is a Maiden name or if she was a widow remarrying ..

looks like she was a spinster, born 1887, Illogan and still at home in the last census available to search.

I have looked at the photograph albums and found the names Martha and Martha Ann Dunstan.

I am not sure what generations these (2) are.

Sorry to be vague but all family stories died with mother and father so I was not made aware of anything so young.

Regards

Nicholas
