Auxilliary Fire Service
« on: Tuesday 07 September 10 23:25 BST (UK) »
Hi All

I decided to search for records for my Grandad, but I don't know where to start, if there would be any records etc etc, I have his Badge, which just says AFS Salford.

He was with them in WW2, but I don't know how long he was in, when he started, or when he finished, also would he of been entitiled to any medals ???

Any info appreciated

Depending on length of service he may have been entitled to the Defence Medal, Debbie.

Thanks Finbar, I now need to find some sort of record to find out how long he was in :)

There is an open day at Salford Fire Station on the 25th of this month, so will go to that, and see if they have any info

I'm also looking for any records pertaining to my father Thomas Gleave who was in the AFS in Manchester and spent the days of the blitz fighting the fires around Piccadilly.  Any information of where I can start my search greatly appreciated.

This link from the NA - http://yourarchives.nationalarchives.gov.uk/index.php?title=Auxiliary_Fire_Service_and_National_Fire_Services%2C_World_War_Two - would suggest you contact local resources, such as the record office or local fire service.

This link gives some useful background to their work - http://www.wartimememories.co.uk/afs.html
