doherty athenry
« on: Wednesday 08 September 10 22:04 BST (UK) »
hi does anyone have any info on james doherty who was living in cartymore athenry in the late 1800s? his wife was mary mullin from fahys field athenry.  my great grandfather martin was one of their children, born 27 nov 1864.he was christened in lackagh turloughmore.have a feeling that james could have come from williamstown or glenamaddy but have no proof of that only that there were dohertys in the area and also know there was a connection to the delaney family who origionate there. can anyone verify if he came from either of these towns?

Hi

There is an earlier generation of Doherty's listed in Lackagh Records, James may have been a sibling born before the church records available from 1841.

Hi there, I am also looking for information on the Dohertys of Lackagh. I'm 99% sure my great-great-grand mother was Mary Doherty whose parents were James Doherty and Mary Mullin. If Mary Doherty went on to move to Dublin and marry a Patrick Hodgins then I know I'm on the right track. Monivea, your great-grandfather Martin was Mary Doherty's sister. It looks like we could be related! Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

No the Priests in Ireland will not give out information know because of fraud.  I think you would have to call in to the church.

Thanks Rathmore, I had a look at that. Mary (hopefully it's my Mary) lived a good age all the same. Also, there doesn't seem to be any Dohertys still living in the Lackagh/Turloughmore area in 1901 which is strange. Thanks again for your help!

I am related to the Mary Doherty (70) and John Doherty (40) on the 1901 census. I am still trying to figure out where they lived exactly. The Mary Doherty (70) on the 1901 census is my 3rd great grandmother. I am still trying to find information. The John Doherty in the 1901 census was a plasterer that worked for the Broderick's. I am in possession of a letter from Mary Doherty where she speaks about the family. The letter states her husband is dead and is buried in Athenry. Her son Patrick Doherty died in 1900 leaving behind three sons and a daughter. John the plasterer is working and went to great expense to bury his brother Patrick. He buried his brother next to the father in Athenry. My great great grandfather is Charles Doherty. He immigrated to the US and the letter is written to his daughter Mary.
