Where is Myvoid Garfield? or is it a typo?
« on: Friday 28 May 04 00:49 BST (UK) »
1881 census for my ancestor James THORNTON and his wife Matilda GARDINER.
Matilda's birthplace is given as Myvoid Garfield. Where would this place be? or is it a transcription error, and if so, what could it be?
Census place is Deans Road Buildings, Wednesfield, Stafford.

Thanks, Aussieshirl. :)

Shirl,
I can't think of any place that it is likely to be.
I had a quick look on 1901 and came up with:

Matilda Thornton  52 B:Staffordshire Bradley Park

Would they be alive in 1891 to get another interpretation? That's the best idea that I can come up with.

Pauline

Thanks Pauline for that reply, and yes that  Matilda THORNTON on 1901 census is probably her as she said she was 32 years old on 1881census. Will check for further info to see if I can come up with another interpretation of the place name
thanks, aussieshirl

Is it possible that Matilda was Welsh and that Myvoid Garfield is the result of the enumerator's interpretation of a Welsh place name, an error in the transcription, or a combination of both? 'Stepdaughter', Louisa, who is probably Matilda'a daughter was born in Shropshire which shares a border with Wales.

Could Myvoid Garfield be Mytholmroyd, Calderdale.
Mytholmroyd is on the River Calder in West Yorkshire, near Halifax.

hi Aussie Girl
To add to the confusion I found the following on the 1891 UK census
for Staffordshire, Wednesfield:

RG12/2241, ED 64, Folio 64, Page 7

Sub Reg. District: Willenhall
Ecc. Parish: Holy Trinity

James, son, S, 14, Worker in Iron Foundry, b Heath Town, Staff.
Caroline M, dau, S, 9, scholar                             "        "
Margret J, dau, S, 7,       "                                   "'       "

I do see Bilston on my map and hope that this may help.

Rosemarie,
Thanks for that, and yes Mytholmroyd does sound very promising doesn't it?
Of course I have no way of finding out for sure unless I can come up with some other record which shows clearly shows Matilda's birthplace. On the other hand she may have been from Wales, as per your previous message. :)
Will keep checking for more info.
Once again, thanks, aussieshirl.

hi Grub,
Thanks for checking that for me. Sadly, I think its two different families,(but maybe related) "My" James THORNTON,born Ireland, was 35 and a puddler at the iron works,
his wife Matilda (GARDINER) was 32, born Myvoid Garfield?.
Their children Louisa GARDINER age 9,John James THORNTON age 6, Thomas THORNTON age 3 and Caroline THORNTON age 3mths. All the children except Louisa, were born at Wednesfield, Staffs. Louisa was born at Church Stretton.
All the above info is from 1881 census.
Thanks, aussieshirl :)

Aussieshirl... Are you really sure Grub's family is different to yours ?  There are too many similarities to ignore.

Grub's reply was from the 1891 census.

Matilda was 32 on the 1881 census.

Remember the census information you have here has been transcribed from handwritten documents. Errors do occur (often).
