Hi TLB

I have volunteered as a researcher on 3 major Convicts from Tasmania projects and one of them investigated what happened to the men after they had served sentence. In many cases they came to Victoria for the Gold Rush but I believe very very few had the money to return to their native home. Some of course married/ or not ?  even though they still had a wife and children at home, some changed their names, many died in poverty.

And  this from the Hobart  Mercury 29 July 1858  (www.trove.nla.gov.au)
CALLING WITNESSES.-The mistakes, fre-
quently ludicrous, which are made in calling
witnesses into Court, are a source of some
delay and inconvenience in reference to the
despatch of business. Yesterday in Mr Justice
Home's court, a witness named Jeremiah
Whelan, a postman at Hamilton, was required,
and was called by several names except the
right one, as Jeremiah Wilman, Jeremiah
Henry, &c. ; at length it was suggested by His
Honor, that he should he called by his usual
soubriquet of " Jerry the Postman." All, how-
ever, proved unavailing, as like Glendower's
spirits, he came not, although loudly called to
appear.

I’m trying to trace my ancestry; Jeremiah Breen from Tipperary who came over on a convict ship. Any chance this is him?

Welcome to RootsChat, Beth,

Perhaps you can share some info about your elusive chap ...  when was he born?  What was the name of the ship that brought him here? What year did he arrive?

I have had a very quick look at one of my offline lists of convicts and I cannot find him ... perhaps his surname had been mis-read as BRIEN ... as I can see Jeremiah BRIEN ..

Again, welcome

JM
