Thanks everyone. I have found the family  I

have been looking for in the 1901 and 1911 online censuses. What an amazing free resource the census transcripts are.

I did strike a little problem which I'm sure is a transcription error.

The 1911 census has NARAN as the townland for Portnoo. The 1901 census has MARIN as the townland. There is a way to alert the site about transcription errors but as far as I can make out they only deal with errors of the personal information kind.

Could someone who is more  knowledgeable than me please check this out and inform the website providers. Thanks again to all who  answered my post

 Haere mai (greetings)   Orkrad

Unfortunately the 1901/1911 census doesn't seem to have a facility for reporting transcription errors for townlands and D.E.D.s- of which there are many mistakes.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

What surnames are you searching.  My family had land that touched Portnoo.  It was in the townland of Lackagh.  Portnoo was roughly on the border of Lackagh and Naran townlands.  There was once a Coast Guard Station there.  I would love to know more about it.

Hi tbmax Greetings from New Zealand .

I am researching the family Kearney/Carney/ Cearney since they have multiple spellings from Portnoo.. I am distantly related to a Mary Ann Kearney who married a ? GATENS. (sometime around 1900/1901)  in Port-Glasgow Renfrewshire Scotland  I am wondering if the Gatens/gaitens/ mc gettigan (again multiple spelings!) came from the same area.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Regards Orkrad

Thanks Derrylass

I will follow this one up. Any thoughts as to why MCGETTIGAN became GATENS or GAITENS when they came to Scotland?

Regards Orkrad

They were also Gethins/Geatons in Ireland; different spellings used on records pertaining to same family.

 Hello again Derrylass

I like the sound of the Gethins/Geatons names. They certainly are a lot closer in sound to GATENS than Mc Gettigan. Do people with this surname hail from somewhere in Donegal near Portnoo?

Regards Orkrad.

Hi

McGettigan family, also known locally as Gatens, in Meenapecky Ardara - which is on the Ardara - Killybegs road -   See census records http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Donegal/Glengesh/Meenapeekey/1175168/
