How did they know it was me?
« on: Sunday 12 September 10 00:04 BST (UK) »
I had an email from Ancestry telling me that there had been additions to my family tree.  Very odd because I don’t have my tree on Ancestry.

Eventually I realised that they were referring to a tree I had looked at a few days earlier - not via my Ancestry log-in but from a private one-name website where my log-in is entirely different.

So - how did they know it was me?

When I do that for some newspapers, I get pop up ads for loans, laser ops on eyes etc.  It really annoys me.  My solution is not to look at those particular newspapers on line and delete all the cookies.  Not sure if that means those particular companies now have no sight of my IP or what.

If you are a Mozilla Firefox user then you can download Adblocker Plus, also subscribe to one of the lists (I use Easylist) that prevents a lot of ad banners on forums and also pop ups.  You can then choose which forums to "allow" pop ups on.

Should have added these are all free to download.  ;)

Hi

I do use Mozilla and I have the adblockers, plus another one called Ad Aware, but these ads seem to come up randomly.  I've tried blocking them but they are not usual ads, more like a website opening.  At first I thought I must have accidently clicked the mouse on an ad running down the side of the page, but I hadn't and I've made sure the mouse is nowhere near the page now.  They open as soon as I go to a couple of newspaper sites.

I thought they used cookies for that and I don't keep them - but perhaps I'm being naive as well as non-techie  ;D

I had another email tonight - same again - so I looked a little closer.  It's not even coming from Ancestry.co.uk but from .com!

Anyway I've 'unsubscribed' to these emails which I never subscribed to in the first place.

You're right Xinia - big brother is more than just a TV programme  :(
