Thanks guys, that's what I've come up with too.

BUT
he was also the informant of the birth and YET I can't find him anywhere!  No birth or marriage info and the only death is in Leeds in March 1858 according to Free BMD and Ancestry.  Even I can work out that without the aid if fertility treatment (which they obviously didn't have in 1859) there's no way they can be one and the same person.

I can't find him on the 1851 or 1861 Census either?

Any ideas?

TIA

Hello Greensleeves

Many thanks for your input.  If I might run a couple of thoughts past you:

Was he born in Flockton? Flickton?

Occuptation: Surveyor's Cl - I assume that's clerk?

His name interests me inasmuch as he is J H Jagger.

I have his daughter's marriage certificate and on it her father is named as Henry Jagger and Henry Jagger was also witness to the wedding.  However, she didn't marry until 1877 and if he was the Jervis Jagger (see above) who died in 1865 then it's either the wrong one or he had a son called Henry.  (I do know that the certificates didn't always state if a father was deceased.)  On the certificate it also states his occupation as "overlooked" which, as far as I know, was like a charge-hand in a mill.  People do change occupations, of course they do, but there must have been a good deal more money in the mill than in a surveyor's office!

Many thanks
Jan
