Hi, my Grandfather John Brodigan was his brother, he also served in WW1 Royal Navy and as a merchant sailor in WW2 did you know Thomas (Also my Dad's name and my son, and a nephew of your Thomas who died in WW2 1943 Burma fighting with the Royal Welch) Thomas led the first convoy of 12 ships to Omaha beach on D Day, found this out from an Aberystwyth Facebook page, from a post about a man's relative went to sea with Thomas for the first time aged 16 ,1942 on a convoy to Iceland

How funny that you just posted this, I literally just posted a question about similar on here.
I am Dora Brogidan's G.Grandaugther and I was always told that the MBE was for the D Day landing, guess my dad got jumbled! what group were you in on facebook?

Not jumbled Bethan.  Omaha beach was one of the five beaches on which the D Day landings took place.

Thomas Brodigan b. 1882 served in the RNR from 1905 he completed at least 4 terms. He has two RNR records held at the National Archives which you can download for free if you sign in.

He also has a Combined Office Merchant Navy Operations [COMNO] pouch held in piece BT 391/11/254 - http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C9207204 - this record is hit or miss with regard to content but it will tell you the name of the ship he was serving in on D Day and beyond.

His CRS 10 - service record from Jan, 1941 until leaving the service should be held at Kew in piece
BT 382/191 - http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C10988417 this will list all his ships during that time.

Also he has one CR10 card held in the Fourth Register of Seamen which has a mugshot id photo. It is available on the paysite FindMyPast.

Finally, I should add that the MBE in 1943 was not necessarily for service on LOTTIE R just that he was serving in her at the time of the award. Birthday Honours do not give a citation as to the circumstances of the award. The CRS 10 would probably help you with that though.

I suggest you try local newspapers for information regarding his MBE, they are usually more informative.

A Citation is only is only an extract of the recommendation for an award, the recommendation is the most informative document. Unfortunately the National Archives only have some for the Army between 1935 and 1990, even then it is hit and miss as to finding the recommendation. My husband was awarded an MBE in 1984, I found his recommendation in the TNA, but there is no record of the one awarded to my uncle in 1949.

As your brother has the Medal, hopefully he also has the Warrant that goes with it.

Ironic really as My Grandfather, Dora ,Thomas and another brother Richard(who was the Father of the Thomas who died in Burma, are all children of Johann ChristianBrauetigaum , born in Plon ,Schleswig Holstein 1847(then part of Denmark, but ethnically German , who left in 1864 without the necessary papers, to avoid military service there was a war that year with Germany and Austria on one side against Denmark which Denmark lost and as consequence lost the 2 provinces, he too was a sailor, and he was the son of a Dorothea Struck , and Christian  Braeutigam, note different surnames...
