'Challer-Luff' or 'Luff' of Haslemere
« on: Wednesday 15 September 10 06:04 BST (UK) »
I have Caroline Challer Luff marrying William Philips in Haslemere on 29.7.1819

Would love to know anything about the 'Luff' side of the family.

Thanks!

Do you have any later records for Caroline to show her age/birthplace?
And are you 100% sure that Luff is her maiden name and she wasn't married before?

It might be "Challen" rather than "Challer" (r and n are often confused in old handwriting).

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html
Shows a Caroline Challen Helyer christened in 1802 Haslemere, apparently illegitimate, mother Mary Helyer.
Mary may have also had another daughter, Eliza Loyd Helyer, in 1796.

Also interesting: Edward Helyer married Elizabeth Luff in 1780 in Haslemere, but before that,
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/ shows an Edward Hillyer of Haslemere, reputed father of a child born to Elizabeth Luff in 1778.

(or this may be a red herring and the reason for the name change is that Mary Helyer later married a Luff, or the entry for Caroline Challen Helyer is in itself a red herring, full details from the 1819 marriage and later records for Caroline Challer Luff/Philips would help say one way or another)

August 10 1806 – Sarah daughter of Richard & Elizabeth Luff – Baptised
September 13 1808 – Richard Bridger & Mary Helyer - Married by Banns at Haslemere

Obviously I cannot say if they are all related to each other or your search but it may help to fill some gaps.  There are various spellings of Helyer and Luff.  And some more entries before this timeframe, but this may be enough to be going on with.

Regards

Hi

If we follow Trish's thinking that makes the 4th entry down in my list a suitable fit with her mother as Elizabeth Luff.
