Did he marry as Jager or Hunter as I cannot find a marriage to Sarah?

What was Sarah's maiden name
Sarah Lythgoe, born Lpool 1846, father George Lythgoe. Marriage was in Boston Mass' USA 1868 ( I have marriage cert' )  he married as "Jager" and on Cert' his parents were " Diedrich and Catherina Jager born in Prussia ( no place names) a son was born in 1870 of which there is no other sign, then a daughter Sarah in 1873 also as Jager and also in Boston ( I have her birth cert'). The next mention of the family is on Lpool 1881 census in Dorritt St, Toxteth and they had changed name to "Hunter" another son Jacob Haigh Hunter was born in 1878 in Lpool.

Hi,

George Lythgoe appears to have married Mary Ann Keggin in Liverpool (Sept Qtr 1844) - see Free BMD and Lancs opc has the baptism of their 4 children including Sarah Ann on 20 July 1845.

The 1851/61 censuses for George, show he was a Shipwright and have his place of birth as  Grapnale Cheshire. This seems to have been spelt phonetically and would most likely be Grappenhall which is near Warrington.

Also looks like his wife Mary Ann Keggin died early 1861 (See Free BMD - maybe due to childbirth complications?) as their child Margaret was baptised 14 Feb 1861 but in the 1861 census George is a Widower.

Thanks Allan
Your search agrees with my own and George married again a couple years later, but what I would dearly like to know is when the " Jager/Hunter" family arrived in L'pool from Boston, got to be between birth of Sarah in 1873 ( Boston) and 1878 (birth of Jacob Haigh) I have searched ships lists with no success, by the way Jacob senior was listed as a seaman on Boston 1870 census ! also when did the name change happen? Thanks for your help
Regards  Clarry

Hi,

I don't know if the information you seek is going to be available on the internet. Presumably at some time, the family must have had some form of naturalisation papers for Jacob and his daughter Sarah, but I would not know if it is possible to obtain copies or whom you would currently approach.

As an aside, one of my wife's family was a naturalised German and was granted a Certificate of Naturalisation from the Home Office in London in 1879 under the Naturalization Act of 1870 - a - "Certificate of Naturalization to an Alien" was issued and as part of this, they were required to sign an oath of allegiance. Fortunately from our point of view, the documentation was retained by the family.

Also, have you thought about looking/contacting the National Archives at Boston to see if they have any emigration records for travellers from Boston to Liverpool?

Alan

:D Thanks for all the Info' Allen, I have tried Boston archives with no success ( maybe its the way I go about it ) !  From what I gather it was considered obligatory for Aliens to report they were residing in the district at the nearest police station, is this an avenue to be pursued and if so how would I go about it, any ideas ?  ::)
Thanks again
Clarry  P.S  I was talking about the Lpool connection.

Hi,

I am afraid I am at a loss to know what to do next - my only idea would be to contact the National Archives at Kew to see if they could point you in the right direction.
