"Factory records"
« on: Friday 17 September 10 03:48 BST (UK) »
Hi
I'm wondering does anyone know if there are records anywhere for people (especially children) who worked in the Factories in the Manchester area at all I believe my Mary Britcliffe was working in a Factory at some stage in the 1840's I'd say.  Any help much appreciated Kind regards Dianna

Hi,

Try contacting Manchester Library,

though only the temporary one at the moment, they should still be able to hlep you out with information, or try the Manchester Records Office.

Dianna - I think there used to be some information on one mill on the Spinning the Web site - I've just glanced now & it's not obvious. In case:
http://www.spinningtheweb.org.uk/

There's a lot of general information about the cotton trade, factories etc on that site that may be of interest.

Further thoughts - the Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI) in Manchester have some collections related to major employers in the area:
http://www.mosi.org.uk/collections
and the People's History Museum have collections related to the labour movement, women's history etc:
