Thanks for the map links (they ended up at the same place!).  I've had a look, but can't find any likely looking places!!  The maps are from 1882, may be I need to look for earlier ones.

His first name on this census is Morris (although his actual name was Maurice and he was also known as Marcus and Moses!)  He died on 30th November 1880 in Camberwell.  I don't yet know when he came to England, only that is was before 1860, when he married an English woman.

Found one from 1827 - not much luck there either  :'(

The only likely place was 'Friesack', and I'm not convinced  ???
