There is a death notice for David W. Moody in the New York Evening Post on www.fultonhistory.com, but it doesn't reveal much else that wasn't already found other than he died suddenly at 7 o'clock in the evening.

Unfortunately, I think it wasn't unusual then for children to wind up in orphanages if their mother passed away and no other female relatives were around to care for them.

Gertrude Merle was buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn on 16 Feb 1909. Lot 5047, Section 126, Grave 549

David W Moody was buried on 16 March 1911 in the same grave.

David (junior) 's widow Lillian M Moody was buried in the same grave at Greenwood on 1 December 1934

I had come across Lilian Moody in the census records but couldn't verify she was part of my family. Finding out she was buried in the same plot as David W Moody and Gertrude Merle confirms she was.

Even though Gertrude was in an orphanage for a time at least the family stayed in contact. So a good ending!

I will now be able to track Lilian's family through the census records. Wish I didn't have to go out this evening!

Gertrude's divorce from Henry J Merle was reported briefly in the New York Sun for 24 June 1879 (the divorce was granted on 23 June). Cause: adultery.
