Hi my mother is the daughter of Robert  Donald CArson.  Her great grandfather I believe is Robert James CArson born 1888 in Ballyshannon, county Donegal. He was the son of William Carson and Ellen Clugston Lyon.
I also have a William Carson born May 1857 and died July 1922 in Ontario.  Apparently he came over on the Tunisian that legft Liverpool and arrived in Quebec in 1909.

Hi Lislegirl,
Does sound very interesting, and would be good if we could find a link between the two Carson families from Ballyshannon. My gt gt grandfather, William Carson was born 1864, father William Carson, mother Mary Ann O'Donnell, so it dosn't appear to be match. However would be good to find if you knew were your Carsons lived in Ballyshannon. I know that my Carsons lived in Portnason & Dunmuckerrin in Ballyshannon.

Regards,
         Mike

If he was a constable he might have lived in the Barracks at Ballyshannon, Constables in the Barracks or listed on the census only with the First Capital on Both surname and name I guess it was for safety reasons because of the troubles.

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie

click on Donegal then put C in the Surname and click OK.
you will have to go through the list, it also has hospital list on this

Hi, yes it would seem not to be a match.  William Carson must have been the name of the area...lol.
My grandfather was Robert Donald Carson
great grandfather Robert James CArson/Elizabeth Fairweather Young........he was a police officer
great great grandfather William CArson/Ellen Clugston Lyon

Children of William/Ellen were Thomas John CArson,Margaret Martin and Robert James

So not sure f any of this fits in with what you have.  I have just recently gotten this info from my mother

Nothing to do with 'safety reasons." All persons in institutions such as hospitals, workhouses, goals, barracks, schools, etc. were to be listed under initials.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
