Help to read 1861 census, please!*COMPLETED, with grateful thanks*
« on: Friday 24 September 10 18:28 BST (UK) »
We are having trouble reading the details on the 1861 Census for Kea and I would really appreciate help.  Can anyone de-cipher the writing for us?  It is RG 9/1562 and the details for the Bray family, the first on the page.
I have tried to attach an image here but my IT skills have failed me!!

Firstly I can't make out the name of the house or the following:-
Head of household - ? Joseph Bray, aged 50, unable to read occupation!
son - ? Joseph Bray, aged 19.
William Bray, son, 17,  ditto for occupation.
Mary A, daur, aged 4.  Can't begin to guess her Rank, Occupation!!  Can anyone read this writing and make out what they are?

Many thanks
KateW

Part of the Parish of Kea, comprisong the Old Church Tow?, Cliff Cottage, Porth Kea Village, Lamb, Penpoll, Trethowell, Trecaster? and Calenick Village, All lying south east of the road leading from Truro

I think the Brays are in Calenick Village

Yes, she was the ancestor we did the search for, so knew her name, it was the others that we found hard to read and needed to be sure it was the right family, thanks though for confirming it.
This is a strange situation and we are having trouble fathoming this family!!  Mary A was, we think the neice, daughter of Eliza Bray's sister Mary, who died in childbirth.  The family story is that Mary was brought up by aunts, so perhaps they just recorded her a daughter.  Note the age gap between her and brother William.
Most strange of all is that having written down her family details (as we can find them) they appear exactly the same as her husband's (places, names, dates and occupations of parents and grandparents) I can't believe that we have the wrong family members. It is proving VERY puzzling!!  ???

Hi Kate

We all know that errors did occur at the various transcription stages, even without anyone telling porkies in the first place  :D

If you would like to post what you know and the references, we could have a look for you to double check.  Sometimes not being associated with the family can have its advantages.   :D

Hi Linda,
Thanks for your offer.  This is the family of a friend and I am helping her with research.  I have told her of your offer and she is happy for me to relay details.  I am not sure of the best way to do this.
I will start with the known (we think we know!! have found census or birth/marriage) facts:
Grandparents:-
William Samuel Coad and Mary.  We are looking at the Coad family.

William's parents:
Samuel Coad b.abt1856, Kenwyn, occupation: Teacher. He had a brother William b.abt 1858.
Mary (Willoughby.)  They married Spt Qtr 1880 Truro where she was recorded as Jane Mary
A(nn) B(ray) Willoughby.

Samuel's parents:
William Coad, b.abt 1822 Feock. Gen. Serv.
Mary Ann (Travis) b.abt 1821, Penryn.  They married Sept Qtr 1853.

Mary Ann's parents:
John Travis, b.abt.1793, Penryn. A Carpenter. and Mary.

They are all details for Samuel Coad's ancestors.

I will add Mary Willoughby's family seperately.
Kate

Hi Kate,

Cornwall Census 1841 -1891 has been transcribed and is available free online

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,144624.0.html

It often pays to consult these transcriptions as a lot of the transcriptions were undertaken by local people who know the people and the area.

I would agree with the transcription.

Cheers Kris  :)
