Hi Kate

I take it all back about the cover-up (it was only a passing thought)

If you can do it without causing offence, I would ask to see the records that your friend has!

Glad to have helped - so far   :D

Hi Linda,

Don't worry, I had already thought it could be a 'cover up'!!! Another friend is helping me with this and we hardly like to suggest that there is something astray here!!

In 1881 Samuel and Mary are in Marlborough, Devon, which I think is near Salcombe.  He is aged 25, school master and Mary is aged 24, a school mistress. (RG11/2182)
In 1871 William and Mary Coad with son Samuel aged 15 it shows John Travis as father-in-law.  Is that enough to prove that Mary A was nee Travis?

I'll suggest getting a birth certificate for Mary Willoughby, which might help us.

Many thanks again,
Kate

The only marriage 1845 - 1858 in Truro is

Mary Ann Travis  1853  Jul-Aug-Sep Truro  Vol 5c Page 273
Others on the same page are
William Coad
Richard Eddy
Elizabeth Behenna

William & Mary Ann Coad appear on the 1871 census (RG10/2283/70/22) with a son Samuel aged 15, presumably the one that went on to marry Jane Mary A(nn) B(ray) Willoughby?

In 1871 William and Mary Coad with son Samuel aged 15 it shows John Travis as father-in-law.  Is that enough to prove that Mary A was nee Travis?

I think these two together are a pretty good indication

Note - the 1881 census is for  Malborough in the urban sanitary district of Salcombe  (Marlborough is in Wiltshire)   :D

Have fun convincing your friend!

Thanks again Tati,

All these little bits of information along with you comments are so helpful.  It's like having a sounding board which is just what I needed.  You are finding snippets that I found but couldn't work out where they fitted.
I think the family have confused 2 sides of their family history.

Thanks for the marriage and birth details.  They, along with the census details I had will help structure a written tree.
 :D

Having put most of the details you found onto a Family Tree Maker folder to create a clearer picture I am seeing the light!!  :)
I realise now that Eliza Bray in 1871 census was 'Step-grandmother' to Mary Ann Bray (Willoughby) and brought her up after her mother's death.  The family story that she was brought up by aunts was perhaps slightly mistaken but not too far from fact.
In 1851 James Bray was a widower and in 1861 he was married to Eliza and they had another daughter, 4 year old Mary A.
Still working on it though!!
Kate.
