William Sanders b. 1837 Applegarth

I am struggling to find Williams mother.
William was born 1837 Applegarth.
On his marriage to Agnes McKaig 1861 Lochmaben his father is given as
Thomas Sanders, Mother Janet Dickson. On Thomas's death record he is shown as the widower of Janet Dickson.
Janet's father James was a blacksmith. In the 1861 Census William is shown staying with his grandmother Alice Dicksonin Templand village, his occupation is given as Blacksmith. He is 23.

Now is the rub.

There is  no mention of a Thomas and Janet Sanders with a son William in the area for the 1851 and 1841 census
There  is however a Thomas and Catherine with a son william b. 1837 and a couple of sibblings with similar ages.

The birth record I have for William  shows his Father as Thomas Saunders , mother Kathrine Carruthers registered Sibbaldbie
So  Did Catherine die and Thomas marry Janet?
I cannot  complete my tree with Janet as William's mother if in fact it was Catherine.

According to the 1861 census - Edward Saunders was b 1830 Johnston which suggests that the marriage of Thomas and Catherine was before that date

I think at this moment I am even more confused!!!!!
I am still collating  all relevent information
to see if I can make sence of it. I am sure the answer is in front of me.

My family records show William born 6th feb 1837 to Thomas Saunders and Catherine Carruthers in Applegarth. They had 12 children.
Thomas remarried after Catherine's death , Margaret Johnstone in 1858

I am searching for information about Thomas' father - Edward who married Elizabeth Smith widow of James Thorburn, he is described as "master tailor".(she died in 1855 aged 88)
