James collins and son michael collins in ireland and liverpool
« on: Saturday 25 September 10 07:41 BST (UK) »
Hi roots chatters
Wondering if anyone can track for me a James Collins who im presuming was a Catholic born in Ireland who had a son named Michael Collins who married in 1869 in West Derby Liverpool at St Michaels Church.
Michael was born in or around 1858 in Ireland according to later census and married Catherine McQuinn also with a father names James Mcuinn and Catherine was supposedly born in Scotland in 1849.
MIchael, the son, was a cab driver and cab driver owner so I wondered if James had a connection to cab driving also?
I've no idea where in Ireland James or Michael came from so it's a difficult one this. I have been trying to find the family maybe in the 1861 census perhaps in Liverpool or West Derby by then but had no luck. Not sure when Michael moved to Liverpool area either so Im stuck.
Can anyone help or suggest where I go from here?
I am unable also to find which James McQuinn is Catherine's father- don't think it's the James McQuinn from Wigtown who is a shoemaker yet- as no one has found that family to have a daughter named Catherine on any baptism yet?
Help. Please
FRANKIE

To start with I've put capital letters for the proper nouns (names and places) in the first part of your post and then removed the capitals from the rest of it (think you hit the Cap Lock key at that point). I've also broken up your post into paragraphs to make it much easier for us to read.

I don't think you're ready yet to start looking for the family in Ireland. To find Irish connections you'll need to know both the families religion and where they lived (parish if not townland) and you haven't even the county yet.

Best to start with the facts you do have and work from there.

Have you found any of the family in 1911 English census? that one seems more likely to give a more exact birthplace than 'Ireland' or the county. We aren't allowed to ask for 1911 census lookups but there are search hints to help you find the information- www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,355239.0.html

For Catherine McQuinn- what's her father's occupation on her marriage certificate? do all census records give her birthplace as Scotland? do all census records give her the same approxiamate age?

For Michael Collins- think you've made a mistake with his age- if he was married in 1869 then he's unlikely to have been born 1858.

Meanwhile, I'm going to move this to Beginners board for the time being.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi again

Michael Collins was born in 1846-48 from different census. He is dead by the 1911 so i cant really check on that. Catherine is a widow on the 1901 census. Michael and Catherine were probably both catholics as they married in a catholic church-St Michael's in West Derby. But i am considering that there is a possibility that Catherine was not definitely a catholic if she was the daughter of a certain James McQuinn shoemaker other people have suggested may be her father. He was a protestant. Yes Catherine was always born in Scotland from each census. Will probably be unable to discover where Michael was born then i suppose unless i come across other clues??
