Sloan/Porter/Murdoch/Crosbie/Tait
« on: Saturday 25 September 10 15:50 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I wonder if anybody can help with the above surnames.
They all come from Kippford and I am trying to find the connections.
I have an old photo (around 1820)of Ann Sloan as an old lady with Samuel Murdoch Crosbie b 1849. Ann's middle name was Corsbie but I guess a mistake occurred and it should read 'Crosbie'.
Samuel moved to Liverpool with his family when he was ten (His father was a ship's carpenter) but Samuel retired to Kippford after being a schoolmaster in L'Pool. He also was the auther of 'Scauronion', a series of historic features in the local paper.
His father, Adam married Margaret Murdoch who was an ancestor of William Murdoch, 1st officer on the Titanic.
I also have two other Murdoch's on my tree:Jannet c1761 who married John Tait and Janet c1762 who married Nathan Sloan.
Lots of the Porters and Murdochs perished at sea Kippford being a seagoing village.
Really would appreciate any info.
Thanks :)

Hi Wendy & Dave,
Unfortunately your email address was removed due to the policy of Roots chat. :(
It is good to hear from you and I wonder if you know what the connection is between Samuel and Ann Sloan. I shall attach the photo of them both with this message.
If you have any of the above names on your tree, please would you let me know as I might be able to work out something. ;D
Thanks for the reply.

Shirley,
If you have access to Ancestry there are at least 10 public trees on that site with
details of the Murdock family..... a little of what some show..........................
Samuel Murdock Crosbie 1848-1937 (Headmaster at Walton-on-the-Hill) married to Sarah Laird Thomson 1852-1935. (They had 7 children) Samuels parents were Margaret Murdock b 1820 & Adam Crosbie 1818-1893.
I have a faint connection through a daughter of Margarets brother James.

Thanks Matt,
I do have access to Ancestry and will make some time to look for clues there.
Thanks for the hint.

Hello,

I've a real interest for the history of William M. Murdoch, and that's how I discovered the texts of Samuel Murdoch Crosbie about ships and sailors of Kippford.

Recently, I bought a tourist guide of Kippford, Rockcliffe and others seasides of Colvend. It's the third edition, published in 1937.

I would write a small article about Crosbie on my site (http://avelkeltia.illustrateur.org/), and as I like to know the faces of people I study, I am very happy to have found your photo. Can I use it for my article? Of course I understand if you do not want.

Thanking you in advance for your response.  ;)

 :)Hello,
Sorry for the delay but I have been rather busy lately.
Of course, please use the photo.
If you have any information relating to William Murdoch which might help me unlock the connection between my family Sloan/Porter/ Crosbie with the Murdoch's. I would appreciate it.
Thanks

Hello,

Thanks! It's very nice of you.

I published the article on Samuel Crosbie on my site, with the Murdoch family tree to locate him in the family. I realized this tree by researching on Ancestry.com, and by reading the Störmer's biography about William McMaster Murdoch, and also with the articles written by Samuel Crosbie. I do not know if it can help you, but if I find more information I'll let you know.

Do you know who is Ann Sloan with regard to Samuel Crosbie, and where this photo was taken? She seems to have been taken in the last years of his life, perhaps in 1920 or 1930 when he returned to live at Kippford ?
