Missing on the 1851 census and no death entry
« on: Saturday 25 September 10 20:05 BST (UK) »
About a year ago I spent ages hunting for my ancestor Jane Nicholas and her second husband Oliver on the 1851 census.  On another fh board I belong to several people also looked but I'm looking back at them now and thought I would open it up to a fresh set of eyes for one last go at finding them.

Jane Chance (nee Sheppard) (1795 - 1858) married 2nd husband Oliver Nicholas in Mortlake Surrey 21/06/1849. All I know for certain about Oliver is what is on the marriage cert - bootmaker and of full age. Jane was a widow on her death cert of 1858. Jane was probably born in Mortlake.

I can't find Oliver's death nor can I find either of them on the 1851 census. Oliver could have died before or after the census. The Oliver Nicholas death in London 1857 is not him. There is an Oliver Nicholas much younger than Jane and born in Usk who pops up in 1841 and 61 but I think he is a red herring (his father's name and occ match the marriage cert).

Jane may not be in the UK at census time as her daughter Harriet married a Polishman Adam Grzybowski . They had a child born in 1849 in France, were in Missouri USA for the 1850 census, had another child in the USA 1852 (poss New York) then Harriet and children were back in London later in 1852 where the 2nd child was baptised and Harriet calling herself a widow. So Jane and Oliver could have been with Harriet and Adam in 1851 and Oliver could have died abroad.

If anyone can spot Jane or Oliver anywhere in 1851 (or a census abroad) or see Oliver's death that would be great.

The Morning Advertiser, 1 Oct 1849 reported that the licence for the King's Arms, St. John St, Parish of St Sepulchre had been transferred from Jane Nicholas (late Chance) to Oliver Nicholas, her husband.
The same paper, 10 Jun 1850, reported Oliver had transferred the licence to a William Nash.

They could be living at the king's arms for the census can you search by address?

Adelaide Chance was old enough to be married so they could be in household
Of her husband

No Jane on adjacent pages. Jane's address on burial [from City of London and Tower Hamlets Cemetery Registers, 1841-1966] is Baltic Street, St Lukes.
