George Fowler / Ann Anderson Aberdeen
« on: Saturday 25 September 10 20:06 BST (UK) »
I'm researching this man and his wife for a friend and have hit the "brick wall".

He was a teacher in Aberdeen in the early 1800s (as stated on his marriage and children's baptism records) and he ran a private school (probably in his home) in Hutcheon St (Aberdeen Journal article 1813). I don't know anything about her background, other than in one of their children's baptisms, she gains the middle name of Georgina.

Here's what I have so far:

* Marriage to Ann (Georgina) Anderson 1801

* A batch of children from IGI and their marriages on IGI and Scotland's People

* The two of them living alone on the 1841 census in Aberdeen.

I have no death certificates so they both probably died before 1855. I don't know where to look next for clues as to who their parents were. I can't find a will either.

If anyone can provide some pointers to other records we'd be very grateful.

Thanks

Jan

Do you know where they were born ?

I notice that the banns for there marriage were listed in both Old Machar & Ellon , presumably one lived in Ellon & the other in Old Machar.

I have checked the IGI nothing jumping out at me that ties in with the ages given on the 1841 census.

I have also checked the MI listings on the ANESFHS, no burials of  George Fowler & Ann Anderson listed in same lair.

Just found Ann Georgina Fowler on 1851 census aged 70 living in Rose Cottage , Corstophine, Midlotihan with a servant , so George must have died. It gives her place of birth as Aberdeen , Aberdeen.
Can't find her on the 1861 , so I assume she had died by then.
I double checked Scotland's People but no death after 1855 showing.
Checking the OPR burials nothing for George Fowler 1841 -1851 in Aberdeenshire, 1 in Midlothian.
For Ann Fowler nothing 1851-1854 but several for Ann Anderson in both Aberdeenshire and Midlothian 1851-1854 but OPR records are not like the death certs , dont have much info on them , some just give cost of mortcloth or coffin.

Whilst searching  I found this obit in the Aberdeen Journal 7 July 1847, must be the same family.
At Corstophine , on the 23rd ult, in the 6th year of his life George Anderson Fowler the only child of Dr Fowler of Corstophine.
It looks like Ann may have moved to Corstophine to be near her son after George's death.

The 1851 census gives Ann's place of birth as Aberdeen abt 1781.
The IGI has an Ann Anderson bapt 29 Jan 1780 parents Andrew Anderson & Cecilia Chambers.
No other bapt showing for Aberdeen itself.

Thank you very much for your time and your posts, especially finding the 1851 census - that's very helpful. I have the other information above but I'm still stumped about their parents, although there are some possibilities, I can't see enough clues to nail them down.

The son you mentioned was Dr William Chalmers Fowler and his brother was the Rev James Charles Fowler.

I've also been looking for parents of George or Ann who might have the Chalmers name but with no luck so far.

Hello,

'lizanne' has done a sterling bit of work.  If you have a look at the following site it'll give a bit of info on the surname Chambers and it's variants - one being Chalmers.

http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~crrking/Chambers/chambers_origin.htm

FYI, living in the NE of Scotland as a boy, I remember the generation born before me referring to the bothy where the single men would have lived - in their time as a 'chammer'.

Good luck with your search.

Regards,   Steve

Ah, thank you for that information. It's looking likely that Andrew Anderson and Cecilia Chambers were her parents then. I looked up the baptism on Scotland's people and Andrew was a writer, which would also fit with the likelihood of Ann being from an educated family.

"Writer", in Scots parlance, meaning a lawyer, notary, attorney, and not a novelist or the like.
