George Channon Barratt
« on: Saturday 29 May 04 19:07 BST (UK) »
I am researching the Barratt side of my family, George Channon Barratt was born in Worthen in 1857, his fathers name was William Barratt and his Mothers name was Thomasine, they were born in Devon, and on the 1881 IGI census Thomasine and her son George and daughter Elizabeth and Elizabeths daughter Amy are living in Wigan,  I am trying to find out if George had any other brothers or sisters born in Wigan or any other information.  If anyone can help I would be very grateful.

Thanks Judith :)

Hi,
 :)
I am a bit confused about this one.

Where is Worthen?

What is the link you have for your Barretts in Montgomeryshire?  I only ask as you mention Wigan  but not anywhere in Montgomeryshire ;D

Hi

Taken from the 'Worthen' web page

Today, the parish of Worthen consists of Worthen itself, Brockton, Hampton Beech, Aston Pigott, Aston Rogers, Rowley, Binweston, Walton, Bromlow, Grimmer, Hope, Leigh and Meadowtown. Hampton Beech is a small hamlet one mile from Brockton. There are no businesses there, just houses. The scenery and tranquillity, however, are splendid and it is a popular area for cycling and walking, as there are many public footpaths nearby. Aston Pigott and Aston Rogers are two hamlets halfway between Worthen and Westbury. Little Worthen is a 'settlement' straight after Worthen consisting of just a few houses. I don't know why it is not just part of Worthen itself. There is also a Little Brockton, consisting of a small amount of homes.

Worthen is surrounded on both sides by hills. The Stiperstones, which are very famous hills, are one side of Worthen. The Stiperstones include the famous 'Devil's Chair', a large natural collection of rocks on the top of one hill, which has an old legend behind it. Also, a warrior, named Wild Edric, is said to be trapped with his soldiers under one hill, supposedly ready to escape in time of need. Sometimes it is possible to hear him hammering away, trying to escape. Another local hill is Bromlow Calow, famous for the small clump of trees on top. In Victorian times, however, trees were all over the hill.

Water is a predominant feature in the parish, as Brockton Brook runs into Worthen Brook, which continues for miles until it reaches the Rea Brook. The brook goes past the roads and sometimes through peoples' gardens. Because of this, there are a lot of bridges around Worthen. One road near Minsterley, which is a village a few miles away, is aptly named Water Lane.

Sorry the only information I have is on the birth certificate which say's Worthen Montgomeryshire, so would I use Shropshire or Montgomeryshire for search?

Also George's sister had an illigitimate child Amy Barratt there, but on the birth certificate it say's Bat Holes Montgomeryshire.
