I moved to Caerphilly in 1969 and recall stopping off at the Clive for a drink when house hunting. Not soon after.....1970 ish it was demolished. What a shame it was a lovely building overlooking the castle. Now we have the glass fronted Tesco !!!!!

i bet it would have been a listed building nowadays and would not have been demolished to make way for that monstrosity thats there now! the planners should have been taken out and shot

I agree with your comments re the planners. You were quite right when you mentioned the Clive was originally called the Black Lion.I am told it was built in the 18th centuary renamed the Clive in 1831 and demolished in1894.Rebuilt soon after.

Still a fine Victorian building

got some info from Tescos, their store was opened on the site in 1972 although the person wasn't sure when the store was built

Thanks for that. Knowing Tescos I don't surpose for a moment they were hanging around for long after demolition

Cheers

According to journal no.8 of the Caerphilly Local History Society (which has a very intresting essay on Caerphilly's pubs), it was pulled down in 1971. There is a photo of it on the 26th Aug 1970.

Going off topic slightly, Caerphilly seems to be forever changing, shame that more of the old buildings (with the obvious excepetion of the castle and Van mansion) aren't preserved. Dont get me started on the number of supermarkets  ;D
