Bowman family from Dalston in Cumbria

My G G grandfather was born in Dalston.......John Robert Bowman ( b 1868 ) son of Amelia Thomlinson and Robert Bowman. They definitely had 4 sons but I believe there may also have been a daughter................John Robert married Mary Richardson and they had my G Grandfather Isaac Richardson Bowman. Can anyone assist  with further info.........? many thanks

The 1871 census only shows son John Robert aged 2

The 1881 has John Robert 13 and Thomas aged 1

The 1891 has 2 additional sons - William 8 and J T aged 3 (J T is Jonathan in 1901)

No additional children shown in 1901 by which time both Robert & Amelia were 54

Given the big gaps between ages - it's possible Amelia may have had other children who died between the censuses

They appear to have had an earlier son called John Henry

Freebmd has a number of Bowman infant deaths in the Carlisle registration district but without spending a lot of money on certificates - it will be difficult to show which family they belonged to

Hi, Thats exactly the position I'm in now...........I have all the census' for the family. Unfortunately , most of the older members of the family have now passed on and the tales are getting a bit warped with time. One of the tales is that the daughter ( and I have a photograph that may well be her ) was brushing her hair and it caught fire from the candles on her dressing table.. She died from her injuries. I'm taking a guess and think she was born round about 1868 ....could she have been maybe John Roberts twin? In the photo she looks about 22-25

If she was born approx 1868 and was in her 20's in the photo - she would be on the 1871 and 1881 censuses with the family

Suspect she belongs to somebody elses family

Hi, she is most certainly family as the photo has written on the back " Dads sister " and it is definitely John Robert in the photo. She may have been staying with a relative on the census nights. Amelia has a notation next to her name in the 1911 census that she had 6 children , two of whom were dead. one of them was John Henry so believe I am on the right path........just gotta find out more info. Also , tale has her as dying in London.......how true , I don't
 know!

John Henry was born 1867 and John Robert 1868/69 so it's unlikely she was born pre-1871

The 1881 has 7 female Bowman entries born between 1871-1881 who were not with parents

The 1891 has 3 female Bowman entries born between 1881-1891 not with parents

None of the entries have a birthplace of Dalston

Have now visited the village of Dalston and seen the Baptismal records held in St Michaels church there. I found the daughter  !!!! She was Mary Ann Bowman born in 1873. Short lived success though as I still cannot find any trace of her on any of the census' ? Ideas welcomed..............
